COMBINATION-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,514, dated June 14, 189s. Application filled January l1897. Serial No. 618,093. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JOHN REUTERBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Two Harbors, in the county of Lake and State of.
5 Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks;
and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art ro to which it appertains to make and use the1 same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference.
My invention relates to improvements in mechanism for locking chests or trunks, the object being to provide a lock that can be opj erated Without a key and may be changed a number of times.
My invention consists of certain novel'constructions and arrangements of parts, reference being had to the drawings, in which similar numerals of reference refer to like or corresponding parts in the several figures of z5 the drawings. l Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention, showing the same applied to a chest or trunk. and 4E. Fig. ishows the form of the casingv into which all the different-parts are placed. Numerall indicates the lid or cover of a chest or trunk; 2, the body of a chest or trunk engaged by the tumblers; 5, the dial; 6, the
plate, to which the lock is secured.

Hole 2l serves as a receptacle for hub 25,'and circular slot 22 is the means'by which said tumbler may be operated through the right-angular projection 26 from hub 25, hub `25 being provided vvith projection 27, which is adapted to` engage one of the grooves A28 in the under sideiof operating-knob 29, which Iextends through hub and isheldfinn place by screw and washer 35. The object of ,said recesses in'said knob 29 is to change the combination of the lock by changing projection 27 from one recess to another in knob 29.V The com- 75 bination changes so that other points on the dial on said knob will indicateV the correct position of the tumblers, the operating-knob 29 being provided on4 its face witliucertain points 30 and 3l, those referred to bynumerals 8o 30 being blank, so as to distinguish them from those referred to `by numerals 31, which are marked by numerals. v Said`points,in,connection with marks 34 on dial 5, arethe referencemarks by which the lock maybe operated and locked. 1
The lock is arranged inthe following way: Dial 5 being preferably made on plate 6 and casing 7secured to the inner side of plate 6 hub 25 is then placed in proper place, so that point 27 projects outside of plate 6. Then tumbler "11 is put `in placeso slot 13 passes over projection 26, when Washer 19 and tumbler 15 allow circular slot 17` topass over projection 26, thenwasher 23, andvtumbler 9 5 20, so that point 26 engages circularA slot 22, after which Washer 24C and cover32 are placed in position and secured together by thebending over of lugs 8 8. Knob 29 is then inserted,
so as to allow projection 27 to engage one of the Ion the underside of said knob.

The operation is as follows: The operator having rst decided as to what points and numbers he desires to use, which in a lock with three tumblers must be three, and with more tumblers will require more points to be employed, tumbler 11 is placed so that slot 14 registers with hasp 3. Then tumblers 15 and 2O are placed likewise, so slots 18 and 23 register with the hasp. Knob 29 is then placed so that point 27 enga-ges the desired recess in Then inserting the hasp, the tumblers may be disarranged by turning the knob, and the lock will be locked. In opening the lock the operatorhaving the combinationfwhich we suppose in this instance is -that is to say, the lock will unlock on the proper point, for instance, number 1 being turned to that number-he turns the knob to the right soY 1 registers with 52 on the dial, then to the lett so point 1 registers with 43,- and then to the right until he registers with 50, when the lock will open.
The combination may be changed at any time by removing screw and washer 35 and place point 27 in another recess. Hence an other point may be used, although the same numbers on the dial and the same number of turns must be used, or the same point can be used and different numbers on the dial. The circular slots in tumblers 15 and 2O may be out out on the same radius and thereby increase the number of locks there may be made with a different combination, as by enlarging the circular slots in either of the tumblers one degree will make a different combination.
I wish it understood that the parts of this lock may be used for other kinds of locks also provided with a dial a turning knob, a hub having a projection 26 extending out and turned over ata right angle, three circular tumblers, two of them having circular holes in their centers one having a slot extending from the central circular hole placed on the hub, two of said tumblers being provided With circular slots adjacent to the center hole for receiving the right-angular projection of the hub, three washers having their ends turned out, placed between said tumblers all of said tumblers having a slot cut in their outer edge into which the hasp adapted to pass said hasp being provided with suitable notches for the tumblers, a suitable casing secured to the face-plate provided with lugs by which the cover is secured, substantially as described and shown.
