W. W. OROGKETT.
LAWN MOWER Y Patented June 7, 1898.
Witnesses awww'ww. @W W UNITED STATE PATENT OFFICE. 7
WILLIAM W. CROCKETT, on FALLS CITY, NEBRASKA.
LAWN-MOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,176, dated June '7, 1898.
Application iiled September 14,1897. Serial No. 651,680. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM W. CROCKETT, of Falls City, in the county of Richardson and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Lawn-Mowers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same. v I
My invention relates to newand useful improvements in lawn-mowers; and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of simple parts thatwil-l be hereinafter fully described. V
Theprimary object of the invention is to provide an improved means for operating the cutter-bar and one that will be simple, durable, and efficient in operation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent in the course of the following description, and the pointsof nov-' elty will be particularly set forth in the claims.
I am enabled to accomplish the objects of my invention by the simple means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a lawn-mower constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section taken longitudinally therethrough.
, Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the frame, which may be constructed of any suitable material and provided with a handle 2. The frame in the present instance is composed of two side bars 3 and endbars 4, bolted or secured together by any convenient means. Journaled in suitable bearings in the side bars and located between said bars is a wheel 5, adapted to contact with the ground when the machine is in motion. Said Wheel is provided with a sinuous cam groove or slot 6, in which is adapted to run a small Wheel 7,v mounted upon the rear end of an arm 8, pivoted to the crossbar at the front of the machine, as indicated by the numeral 9, and extending forwardly and provided with a bifurcatedend 10,-the "arms ofwhich straddle or embrace a short vertical pin 12, provided in the central portion of a sickle-bar 13,
cured to the frame 1.
which reciprocates upon a guard-plate 14,provided at its end with small rollers 15, which keep the plate elevated a short distance above the ground. Said guard-plate is secured to the frame by a bar 16, secured on the under side of said-plate and bolted or otherwise se- Secured to the rear cross-bar 4 and bent and extending into the sinuous groove is a finger 17, adapted to keep the said groove at all times clear of dirt or other material having a tendency to clog or fill said groove. Mounted upon the rear crossbar is an arm 18, extending upwardly for a short distance and bent rearwardly and secured to the upper side of the handle to maintain the same in elevated position.
21 indicates a standard made, preferably, in inverted- U shape and secured to the frame adjacent to the forward face of the drivingwheel, intermediate said wheel and the pivot upon which the sway-bar vibrates;
22 indicates a pendent link pivoted in the upper end of said standard and" provided at its lower end with a foot 23, adapted to rest upon the sway-bar immediately in advance of the roller, engaging the sinuous groove in the drive-wheel 'in such manner as to hold said roller in engagement with the Wheel and prevent its "accidental displacement.
I do not deem it necessary to describe the operation'of my improved lawn-mower, the
same being apparent from the drawings.
In practice I so construct and set the guards upon the guard-plate that each section of the sickle .bar or knife passes over two spaces between said guards, thus making two cuts at one stroke of the sickle.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the frame of the machine, the operating-Wheel j ournaled in suitable bearings in said frame and provided with a sinuous groove, and the reciprocating cutter, of means for giving the motion to the cutter When-the operating-wheel is rotated, and an arm or finger secured to the frame and extending into the groove to keep the. same clear, substantiallyas'and for the purpose set forth.

vibrating the sway-bar, a support above the VILLIAM XV. CROCKET'I. 5 sway-bar, a link pivoted to the said support \Vitnesses:
having at its lower end a foot pressing upon 0. II. RICKARDS,
the sway-bar, for the purpose set forth. J. E. LEYDA.
