FILING-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,986, dated May 31, 1898. 7 Application filed March 12, 1897. Serial No. 627,190. (No model.)

To all whom, it Wmy concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES O. HIsoocK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rid geway, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing-Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved and inexpensive filing-case for classifying and preserving for ready reference notes, newspaper-clippings, letters, legal documents, and other written or printed matter.

It consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the case when closed. Fig. 2 shows the case with one lid open and discloses the rod F and one of the series of receptacles, the others lying directly beneath. Fig. 3 represents one of the receptacles detached. Figs. 4 and 5 show two other forms for the rod F.

The case, as shown in Fig. 1, is formed by attaching with cloth hinges to the box G,

The box and lids should be made of cloth, board, or similar material and the finishing coveringput on after the case is thus made.

- The rod F, formed from a continuous piece of wire, is of such shape that it can be fastened very securely to the inside bottom of the-box by means-of staples, strong thread, or When thus secured, it will be seen that it not only holds the receptacles in position, but the free ends of the posts being blunt and reaching exactly to the inner surface of the lid B form a firm support near itscenter to counteractany pressure upon it in fastening the lids together when closing the; case or otherwise. I

The receptacles, asshown in Fig. 3, are each made of a single piecevof paper. The part 0 is somewhat wider than the part D, so as to allow the flaps 1 to be. folded over and glued to the partD, as indicated. The perforations form places for the free ends of the rod F.

The thumb-hole in the part 0 makes it possible to lift any desired receptacle from the case with ease, and the rounded portion cut from the part D facilitates the examination of its contents. Making the entire receptacles of different-colored papers will help to distinguish them from each other, and thus facilitate the finding of any desired subject.

When in general use, only lid A is to be opened, and lid B serves as a guard to keep the receptacles on the rod F; but if it is desirable to rearrange the receptacles or'take one out of the case it is only necessary to open the lid B.

The titles E on the back of the case are small rectangular pieces of colored paper. These being of different colors will add to the attractiveness of the device and make a convenient place on which to indicate the contents.

Th'e receptacles may be printed either in blank, as shown in the accompanying drawings, or, more definitely, with the particular subjects to be kept in them.

I make no special claim for the particular construction of the fastener H to be used on this case. The type or style of fastener shown is that which is commonly termed springfasteners, such as are largely used in fastening gloves, dzc. when two members are forced together, .one entering and being clasped by theother.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. The combination of the file-case G, with the two lids A; and B, Sfzichntinuous rod.
