SerialNo. 636,223. damned My invention relates to a convertible crib of which the parts are adapted to be adjusted to form either a cradle, a chair, or a babytender, the chair or cradle body being adapted to swing; and the object in view is to provide a simple, efficient, and compact construction and arrangement of parts whereby the changes necessary to adapt the device for the several uses mentioned may be accomplished with facility.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention adj usted for use as a chair. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts adjusted as a bed or cradle. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section with the parts as illustrated in Fig. 1 and indicating in dotted lines the supporting-bars when in their rearwardly-adjusted positions. Fig. 4
is a rear view to show the locking devices for the back.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
The frame of the device embodying my invention consists of corner-posts 1, connected by upper and lower side rails 2 and 3 and upper and lower end rails 4 at one end and a single lower rail 5 at the other end, thus leaving the frame open at one end, which will be referred to hereinafter as the rear end, with the exception of the single lower cross-bar 5. The corner-posts are provided with antifriction supporting rollers or casters 6, whereby when the device is in use as a baby-tender it may be readily moved. T
Suspended within the frame is an adjustable chair structure having a seat 7, a back 8, and a foot-rest 9, the same being so connectedfas to bearranged either to form a chair, as illustrated in Fig. 1, or a bed-bottom, as shown in Fig.2. This chair structure is supported by swinging arms 10 and-11, the former of which are pivoted to the seat7 and the latter to the back contiguous to its pivotal point of connection with the seat, and said swinging arms being pivotally connected at their upper ends to horizontal supportingbars 12, which rest upon the upper edges of the sides of the frame or upon the upper edges of the upper side bars. These supportingbars are connected with the sides of the frame by means of parallel links 13 and are capable of either forward or rearward adjustment, as shown, respectively, in full and dotted lines in Fig. 3, the former position being normal and adapting the device for use either as a swinging chair, a cradle, or a crib. \Vhen the supporting-bars are adjusted rearwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the device is adapted for use as a baby-tender in that the chair structure is moved sufiiciently to the rear to allow the occupant of the device to walk between the sides and closed end of the frame. A detachable handle 14, provided with a clasp, is also employed for imparting swinging movement to the chair structure or bedbottom, said clasp being adapted to engage either. of the swinging arms, and a screen-guard 16 is employed to close the space between the upper and lower sidebars and thus prevent the occupant of the chair from injury by contact with the rounds 1'7, by which said bars are spaced.
From the above description it will be seen that the chair structure, comprising the seat, back, and foot-rest,constitutes a sectional bedbottom which when the parts are arranged in a common plane, as illustrated in Fig. 2, is adapted to support the occupant of the device in a reclining position, and any suitable means may be employed for accomplishing the adjustment of these sections of the chair structure to hold them in either'their horizontai or any desired relative position. The preferred construction embodies side arms 18, connecting the back-section at an intermediate point with the upper extremities of footrest arms 19, said foot-rest arms being pivotstruction illustrated these latches are con nected by a coiled actuating-spring 23, whereby they are yieldingly held in operative relation with the segments. Operating-levers 24 are also pivotally mounted upon the backsection contiguous to its top and are connected by rods or wires 25 with the latches, whereby the movement of the operating-levers toward each other, as by opposite pressure applied by the thumb and finger thereto,
serves to withdraw the latches from the segments and allow the back to be adjusted. The latches are preferably mounted upon guard-plates 26, having guides 27, which embrace the segments, and also having perforated ears 28, through which the bolts of the latches operate. Furthermore, the operating-levers are provided with inner and outer stops 29 and 30.
The occupant of the swinging member of the device may impart an oscillatory movement thereto by periodical pressure applied to the foot or closed end of the frame; but when it is desirable to operate said swinging member exteriorly, as by an attendant, the handle 14: is applied to either of the swinging arms to suit the convenience of the operator. Furthermore, it will be seen that as the front and rear swinging arms are pivotally connected at their lower ends respectively to the seat and back sections the arrangement of the back and foot sections of the chair structure in a horizontal position will dispose the seat-section in a corresponding and common plane therewith, whereas the arrangement of the back' and foot sections at an inclination to the seat-section to form a chair will allow the rear edge of the seat-section to drop slightly below the plane of its front edge and thereby incline the seat-section downwardly toward its rear edge, thus giving greater comfort to the occupant of the chair than if the seat-section were maintained in a horizontal position.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- A 1. The combination of a frame a chair structure suspended within the frame by swinging arms, and adjustable connections between the swinging arms and the frame, whereby the chair structure may be adjusted longitudinally of the frame, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a frame having antifriction supporting devices, a chair structure suspended within the frame by swinging arms, and adjustable connections between the swinging arms and the frame whereby the chair structure may be adjusted longitudinally of the frame, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of a frame, supportingbars mounted upon the frame for adjustment longitudinally thereof, swingingiarms carried by the supporting-bars, and means for supporting an occupant suspended by said swinging arms, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of a supporting-frame, a sectional chair structure suspended for swinging movement within and longitudinally of the frame, and means for securing the sections of the chair structure in the desired relative positions, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of a supporting-frame, supporting-bars resting upon the upper edges of the sides of the frame, links connecting the supporting-bars with the frame, whereby the supporting-bars may be adjusted longitudinally of the same, swinging links suspended from the supporting-bars, and a sectional chair structure supported by the swin ging arms, substantially as specified.
6. The combination with a supportingframe, of side swinging armspivotally mounted at their upper ends on the frame, an occupant-supporting device suspended by said swinging arms within the frame, and an operating-handle provided with a clasp constructed to fit upon and detachably engage the upper end of one of said swinging arms, whereby oscillatory motion may be imparted to the occupant-supporting device by an attendant, substantially as specified.
7. The combination with a supportingframe, of a sectional chair structure suspended by swinging arms within said frame, and including a seat-section, a foot-section having arms pivotally mounted upon the seat-section, a back-section pivotally mounted upon the seat-section, side arms connecting the back-section with the upper extremities of the arms of the foot-section, perforated seg ments carried by the seat-section, spring-actuated latches pivotally mounted upon the back-section to engage the perforations of said segments, and contiguous bell-crank operating-levers 24 mounted upon the back-section at its upper end and respectively connected by independent means with said latches, substantially as specified.
8. The combination with a supportingframe, of a sectional chair structure having pivotally-connected seat, back and foot sections, and means for securing the same at the desired relative adjustment, and spaced front and rear swinging arms supported at their upper ends with the said frame and pivot In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in 10 the presence of two Witnesses.
