Description

(No Model.)
E. L. MEYER. BOTTLE.
No. 604,062. Patented May 17,1898.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK L. MEYER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,062, dated May 17, 1898. Application filed January 10., 1898. Serial No. 666 ,132. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK-L. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city of NewYork, in the county of Kings and State of N ew York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bottles which are particularly designed for containing aerated liquids, such as soda-water, but which are capable of use for containing other liquids.
The object of my invention is to provide and produce an improved bottle for the purpose which can be more readily and rapidly emptied of its contents than is now possible.
l find in practice that with bottles containing particularly aerated beverages, as heretofore constructed, the contents are discharged very slowly, owing to the atmospheric pressure at the bottle-mouth and to the formation of the partial vacuum in the bottle. I overcome these objections by providing my improved bottle with a suitable vent device, by which atmospheric air may be admitted within the bottle, so as to counterbalance the pressure on the contents and to thereby enable the liquids to be drawn 0E smoothly and rapidly.
In order that'my invention may be `better understood, attention is directed to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a common form of bottle embodying my present improvements, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
In both of the above views corresponding parts are represented by the same letters of reference.
The bottle referred to, which is of a common type, is provided with a cork A, secured in place in any suitable Way, such as by a wire bail B, as shown. The shoulder C of the bottle is provided with a depressed recess a,
. over which a suitable seal b may be placed.
Such a seal is preferably composed of a wafer v of paper of suflicient strength for the purpose, coated on its under side with an adhesive substance, by means of which it may be secured air-tight over the recess ct. Depending from the recess a is a vent-tube c, which preferably extends parallel with and forms a part of the walls of the bottle. The lower end of this vent-tube c is by preference bent inward at d and extends adjacent to the bottomof the bottle. Before the bottle is filled the seal b is secured in place over the recess a, so as to prevent the escape of the liquid through the vent-tube c. The bottle is then filled and charged, as heretofore. When the bottle is to be opened, the cork Ais removed in any suitable way, after which the seal b is perforated by a sharp instrument or by the thumb of the operator, so as to admit a supply of air through the vent-tube c, which will counterbalance the pressure on the liquid and enable it to flow easily, smoothly, land rapidly from the bottle. By arranging the seal b adjacent to the shoulder of the bottle it will be so disposed that the operator may remove the cork and break the seal with one hand.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent; is as follows:
l. As a new article of manufacture, a bottle provided with a recess on its shoulder, and a vent-tube connected with said recess and opening outward at its upper end, said venttube being integral with the walls of the bottle, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a bottle provided with a recess on its shoulder, a vent-tube connected at its upper end with said recess, and a seal for said recess, substantially as set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a bot-i.
tle provided with a recess on its shoulder, a vent-tube connected at its upper end with said recess, and a breakable seal for said recess, substantially as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 6th day of January, 1898.V
FREDERICK L. MEYER. Witnesses:
EUGENE CONRAN, JNO. R. TAYLOR.
