To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD CLIFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Reels, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in hose-reels, and particularly to improvements in hose-reels of the character employed in buildings having a fixed water-supplyapparatus to which the hose may be permanently applied.
In the embodiment of my invention herein presented the reel proper is keyed upon the stem of the valve controlling the flow of water, and said valve is opened by the unwinding of the hose from the reel, so that upon the hose being unwound for use the water is automatically turned on and is within the hose as soon as the latter can be used. When fully unwound, the hose is entirely free of the reel and is simply left connected with the exposed water-supply apparatus. After the use of the hose in extinguishing a fire the reverse motion of the reel, without regard to the hose, will close the valve in the water-supply pipe, and thereafter at any convenient time by unkeying the reel from the valvestem, but leaving said reel to turn freely on said stem or on a sleeve around said stem, the hose may be rapidly rewound upon the reel without affecting the valve.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section through a reel and water-supply apparatus embodying the invention, the valve controlling the flow of water being shown in its closed position and the hose being omitted from the water-supply pipe. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of a reel and hose embracing the invention; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detached side elevation of a portion of the reel.
In the drawings, A designates the reel,which is. composed of the hub B and plates or disks 0 O, the latter being secured to the flanges D of said hub by means of the bolts E, upon which the hose F is wound, as indicated more clearly in Fig. 2.
The hub B is of cast metal and contains the have central apertures, as shown, the disk nearestto the valve-casing J having its central aperture of the same size as the bore G of said hub B, While the disk 0 at the outer side of the reel has its central aperture of smaller diameter than. the bore G of said hub B, whereby a portion (lettered M) of said disk projects inward and forms an'annular flange or lip which is utilized, as hereinafter described, for fastening the reel A and valvestem I together, so that the movement of the reel turning on its axis will effect the longitudinalmovement of the valve-stem I.
The valve-casing J, the water-pipe K, and the valve N are of well-known form, said valve-casing, as usual, receiving the sleeve H and being provided with the nozzle 0, to which the hose F is attached. The sleeve H is internally threaded to engage the thread on the valve-stem I, which, as clearly illustrated in Fig. l, carries the valve N and is threaded in part and left of polygonal form in cross-section in part. The threaded portion ofthe valve-stem I engages the internal thread of the sleeve H, and thus when the valve-stem is rotated by means of the reel or otherwise the said valve-stem is caused to have a reciprocating motion, causing the valve M to engage its seat or to recede therefrom. The hub B of the reel turns freely upon the exterior surfaces of the sleeve H, but is keyed thereon, so as not to travel longitudinally upon said sleeve. The keys securing the hubB to the sleeve H are illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 and in section in Fig. 1, and they are lettered P, and said keys are simply in the form of round pins carried by the hub B and entering the annular groove Q, which is formed in said sleeve The keys P are in effect rigid with'the hub B, and their inner surfaces rest within the annular groove Q of the sleeve H, and thus the reel A may have a free axial mot-ion around the sleeve H, but will be prevented. from traveling longitudinally on said sleeve by means of the keys P. The keys P are simply convenient forms of keys, and the present invention is not confined to any special means for keying the hub B upon the sleeve H.
Upon the outer portion of the valve-stem is applied the externally-threaded sleeve R, having a polygonal central bore loosely fitting upon the polygonal portion of the valvestem I. The sleeve R is externally threaded to receive the nut S and jam-nut T, and at its inner end is formed with the head V,which is within the bore G of the hub A and at the inner side of the outer disk 0, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The sleeve R is passed upon the valve-stem I until the head V of said sleeve is within the bore G of the hub B before the outer disk 0 is secured in place, and thus the head V comes at the inner side of said outer disk 0, and the inwardly-projecting portion M of said disk is between the said head V and the securing-nut S. It will be apparent from an inspectionof Fig. 1 that when the nut S is screwed firmly home the inwardlyprojecting portion M of the outer disk 0 will be rigidly secured between said head and said nut and that thereby the reel A,wl1ile free to revolve upon the sleeve H, is
, rendered rigid with the sleeve R,which is incapable of rotation except with the valvestem I. The loosening of the nut S from the inwardly-projecting portion M of the outer diskO leaves the reel A free to rotate upon the sleeve I-I without affecting the sleeve R or valve-stem I.
The hose F is at one end provided with the usual nozzle and at its other end is coupled to the nozzle 0, forming a part of the permanent water-supply apparatus. The end of the hose F which is coupled, to the nozzle 0, as
- indicated in the drawings, while removable,
is not intended to be removed from said nozzle except on some occasion in which it might be desired to examine the valve or make other inspection. In winding the hose upon the reel, one end of the hose being coupled to the nozzle 0, the hose at about its center will be folded upon a cylinder or core of the kind shown in Letters Patent of the United States, No.. 585,861, granted to me July 6, 1897, and the said cylinder or core (indicated in Fig.
2 by the letter X) will be placed within one, i of the spaces between the webs L of the hub B, and thereupon the hose will be wound upon the bolts E in double layers, the discharge-nozzle WV being left in close proximity to the reel A. The hose F will preferably be wound upon the reelA when the latter is upon the sleeve H and the nut S is loosened from the outer disk 0, in which condition the reel A is free to be revolved in either direction without aifectin g the valve-stem I. The hose being wound upon the reel A, the latter will be secured to the valve-stem I by the tightening of the nut S against the inwardly-projecting portion M of the outer disk 0, and upon this being done the reel may be left until occasion shall arise requiring its use.
In the employment of the apparatus for the extinguishing of 'a fire the attendant will seize the nozzle W and carry the same toward the fire, this action of pulling on the hose causing the reel to unwind the latter and at the same time to effect the outward movement of the valve-stem I and valve N, whereby the water from the pipe K may pass through the nozzle 0 into the hose F. The hose will be I necessary to loosen the nut Sfrom the outer disk 0, and thereupon the hose at about its center will be doubled upon itself, as before, and placed upon the reel A, which, being then free of the nut S, may be conveniently revolved to wind the hose upon itself without affecting the valve-stem I or valve N. After the hose has been again fully wound upon the reel A the nut S will beretightened against the disk 0, and thus the reel is again in condition and position for immediate use. The nut S locks a part of the reel A to the sleeve R, and the latter is keyed upon the valve-stem I, and thus when the nut S is tightened against the disk 0 the sleeve R and reel A will revolve together and cause the thread on the valve-stem to travel inthe thread within the bore of the sleeve H, the effect being that the valve-stem will have a longitudinal movement and pass ,through the sleeve R.
The reel made the subject of this application is shown upon a horizontal sleeve H and valve-stem I but the invention is not limited to the position the reel may occupy with respect to the wall adjacent to which it may be placed, and said reel, sleeve H, and valvestem I may, when desired, be placed in a vertical position or arranged at an angle of fortyfive degrees or at any other angle which may be found convenient under conditions to be met in supplying the apparatus to buildings.
The sleeve R is directly on and carried by' straining said reel, while revolving, against traveling with said stem, and the hose at one end connected with said exposed nozzle and thence while doubled at about its center wound upon said reel; substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the water-supply apparatus having the valve, valve-stem and exposed hose attaching nozzle, the sleeve around said stem, the reel mounted on said sleeve, means for preventing the reel while revolving from traveling longitudinally 011 said sleeve, means connecting said reel with said stem to transmit the motion of the reel to said stem to operate thevalve, and the hose at one end connected with said exposed nozzle andthence while doubled at about its center wound upon said reel; substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with the water-supply apparatus having the valve, projecting valvestem, and exposed hose-attaching nozzle, the sleeve connected with said water-supply apparatus and having an internal thread, the reel mounted upon said sleeve, means connecting a polygonal portion of said valvestem with said reel but permitting said stem during the revolving of the reel to travel longitudinally, means preventing said reel from having a traveling motion while revolving on said sleeve, and the hose at one end connected with said exposed nozzle and thence wound upon said reel; substantially as set forth.
4. The water-supply apparatus having a hollow sleeve, a valve and a valve-stem projecting through said sleeve, combined with a reel mounted to turn axially upon said sleeve, the sleeve R, having a polygonal aperture fitting upon a polygonal portion of said valvestem and provided at one end with a head and at its other end with a nut, whereby said sleeve may be clamped against a portion of said reel to connect the reel and valve-stem, and suitable hose wound upon said reel; substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with the water-supply apparatus having a sleeve,a valve and a valvestem projecting into said sleeve and having. a threaded portion to engage the thread of said sleeve and also a polygonal portion, the reel mounted to revolve upon said sleeve and otherwise stationary therewith, the sleeve R having a polygonal aperture receiving the polygonal portion of said valve-stem and having also the head G within the bore of said reel, the nutS on said sleeve R for clamping a portion of said reel against said head, and hose suitably wound upon said reel; substantially as set forth.
6. In combination with water-supply apparatus having the internally-threaded sleeve, the valve and the valve-stem projecting into said sleeve and being threaded in one portion and polygonal in cross-section in another portion, the reel mounted to revolve upon said sleeve and keyed thereon and extending outward beyond the outer end of said sleeve, the sleeve R having a polygonal aperture receiving said valve-stem and provided with the head G intermediate the outer end of said sleeve and the outer portion of the reel, and the nut upon said sleeve R to clamp said outer portion of the reel against the said head G; substantially as set forth.
7. In combination with water-supplyapparatus having a valve, a sleeve and a valvestem projecting through said sleeve, the reel receiving within its hub said sleeve and valvestem, means directly on and carried by said valve-stem for detachably connecting said stem with said reel so that said stem may receive the motion of said reel, and means for preventing said reel from traveling longitudinally with said stem; substantially as set forth.
