Description

R. AUGGGK. MANIFOLD WRITING TABLET.
No. 601,219. Patented Mar. 22, 1898.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
ROBERT'AUCOCK, 0F UTICA, NEW YORK.
MANIFOLD-wRlTlNG TABLET.
SPECIFICATION 'forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,219, dated March 2e, 189s.
Appiiafion mea nach 1o, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT AUcooK, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State vof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifold-Writing Tablets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letv ters and figures `of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l 'shows a'perspective view of my gradually-reversible manifoldingrpad and holder therefor. Fig. 2 is a plain edge view of thev same. Fig. 3 shows details of the construction of the pad on a large scale and in connection with the carbon-sheet andthe backer and holder therefor. Fig. 4 shows in detail the pad partially used and partially reversed. Fig. 5 shows in part details of the constructionrand arrangement of the carbon-sheet and backer and holder therefor. Fig. 6 showson a small scale a plan view of one of the double sheets employed in the pad. Fig. 7 shows in the same manner the other sheet. The gradually-reversible pad 1 consists of a numberzof alternate sheets A and B. These sheets are double the length of the completed pad, and after being placed together alternately in sufficient quantity to make the pad of the desired thickness they are stitched together along the line b b by loose stitching b'. The sheets A are provided with perforated lines a a, on which they can be separated or divided.
The pad constructed as described is adapted for use with a holder consisting of a plate-v like back 2, having a shoulder 3 at its end,
against which the doubled end of the pad is adapted to abut, and the spring-clamp 4, having the movable'bar or jaw 5 thereof adapted to rest on the head end of the pad, as shown. The clamp 4 is provided with a spring 6 for holding it in closed position and may be provided wi-th curved arms 7 7 to act as a pen or pencil holder or support. In connection with the pad and holder there is provided a carbon or other sensitized sheet 8 of thin material secured by a channel-clamp 9 tothe end of Serial No. 626,761. (No model.)
the carbon-backer l0, of thin rm stiff sheet material. The board 10 is of a length to adapt it to engage under the edge of the clamping-bar 5 when the pad is held in the holder, while the clamp 9 on its opposite end projects beyond the end of the pad, asshown particularly in Fig. 3.
The device is usedfas follows: The two uppermost sheets of the pad are raised and the backer -lO is inserted in the pad, so that the upper end engages under theclamping-bar 5. One of the sheets is then turned down on the backer l0 and then the other top sheet on top of the carbon-sheet 8. It will be noted that the top sheet in each instance upon adjusting -the device for use is `one having a perforated line a at its upper end. The writing placed ,upon the uppermost sheet is also duplicated by the carbon-sheet upon the next lower sheet, and the carbon-sheet being of the most sensitive kind and supported by the backer l0 a copy will be obtained by'writing with the ordinary pen and ink. Upon the completion of the writing on the rst sheet it is detached by tearing it off at the perforated line a, and theclamp is loosened and the pad taken out and the carbon-backer, with the carbon-sheet, removed, when the sheet which has just received the copy is turned over the head of the pad and folded under andthe pad is replaced in the backer and the .carbon-sheet and its holder replaced for fur- 'and the pad, and the pad will thereby be held in shape and protected. The position in which the stubs of the detached sheets remain when the pad is partially reversed is clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The' back 2 of the pad-holder has its corners cut away on the end to which the clamp is aflixed, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, which enables the operator to grasp the corner of thepadwhile adjusting it in the holder and at the same time hold the head of the pad IOC ing the Copies after the pad is used up in a letter-file or anyordnarydeviee for sneh purpose.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A duplicate copy gradnallyreversible lnanifolding-pad Consisting only of alternate double sheets A and B loosely stitched together at their middle, the sheets A having transverse perfor-ate lines a a on either side of the line of stitching, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination With a gradually-reversible 1n anifoldn g-pad of a pad-holder hav-
