DEVICE FOR SWAGlNG GOLD-PLATE FOR CROWN 0R BRIDGE WORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,604, dated March 15, 1898.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HARAI-I BAIRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Swaging Gold-Plate for Crown or BridgeWork; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in apparatus for swaging gold-plate for making crown and bridge work for dental purposes; and it is embodied in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter stated, described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
The apparatus employed in carrying out the invention is by preference composed of two members, one or both of which are movable toward and away from the other, preferably in a parallel plane, and between the two members is interposed a male die, the metal to be worked, and the relatively soft material into which the die and metal are forced.
In the drawings I have illustrated a preferred form of apparatus or device; but I desire it understood that the invention is not limited to the particular device shown, as changes in the construction and arrangement of parts can be made without departing from the nature and spirit of the invention.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete apparatus or device. Fig. 2 is a section on line 00 as, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a die-holder, showing a die removed and located at one side.
In the drawings I have shown what may be conveniently termed parallel pliers that is, pliers wherein the two jaws have a paral- The lower j aw A of the pliers is constructed in the form of an anvil having anextended seat portion or base a and a dovetailed recess or groove (1., formed in its upper face. The upper member B has a fiat under face and an upwardly-extended elongated striking-section I). These two members A and B are preferably formed of hard metal and have on their rear adjacent faces or sides the rear- ;wardly-extending arms 0 D, having bifurcated ends 0 d.
E E designate the handles, which are crossed in the usual manner and pivotally connected by a central bolt (2 at the point of crossing. The short projecting ends of the handles are pivotally connected by pins 6 to slide F, fashioned to fit within the dovetailed groove a, which latter has an open front end, so that the slide may be easily slipped into the groove and removed therefrom when desired.
The slide F carries a male die, which may be either integral therewith or, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, detachably placed therein by having the same fitted into a suitable socket or seat f, formed in the slide. The die, which is designated by the letter H, is designed as an exact duplicate of the desired surface to be crowned, built up, or bridged, and is formed of hard steel. It is intended that in connection with the apparatus a series of dies shall be used, each fashioned to be received and held by the lower jaw, the series representing, respectively, exact duplicates of the respective natural teeth or parts-such as, for instance, the front and back of the incisor and cuspid teeth, the face or cutting-surface of the molar and bicuspid teeth, both upper and lower, there being by preference but one of the latter upon the respective die; but of the former both front and back may be conveniently placed upon a single die.
In using the apparatus the die is inserted in the lower jaw of the apparatus. The goldplate is placed upon the die. A bar of soft lead K (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1) is then placed over the gold-plate and against the under face of the upper jaw. When in this position, the jaws are closed to prevent the slip ping or moving of the two plates. The anvil or lower member of the pliers is then placed upon a solid base, and the upper jaw is struck with a hammer or other suitable implement until the gold-plate is swaged to conform to the contour of thedie, the soft metal or lead being also indented and yielding to the pressure. By this means the gold is swaged in the plate, leaving the clear imprint of the die on both its outer and inner face. The plate is then taken out and worked into a crown, bridge, or abutment for a bridge.
It is obvious that the die can be mounted in the slide in a manner other than that shown, and it is to be understood that in that respect the invention is not limited to the form shown and described.
As stated above, while I have shown a special form of pliers, yet I desire it understood that any desired form may be employed, whether of the pliers type or press type, so long as the two jaws are arranged to have a parallel movement and fit perfectly upon one another.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a jaw A having the extension Ct and a retaining-groove in its upper face, of a slide carrying a male die removably held in the recess, an upper jaw B having a hammer extension 5, handles pivotally connected with the jaws, a fiat-faced softmetal block between the jaws and means whereby the jaws are moved parallel, substantially as described.
2. The combination with two parallel jaws and means for moving them toward each other the upper jaw having a striking extension thereon and the lower jaw having a flat resting extension, a slide carried by the lower jaw, and a die removably carried by the slide, substantially as described.
3. The combination with two parallel jaws and means for moving them toward each other the upper jaw having a striking extension thereon and the lower jaw having a fiat resting extension, a slide carried by one of the jaws, and a die removably carried by the slide, substantially as described.
