P. J. A. SMITH. PAPER FASTENER AND HANGER. No. 600,559. r Patented Mar. 15,1898.
WITNESSES INVE/VTUH I fl g UNrnD STATES PATENT OFFICE- PATRICK J. A. SMITH, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
PAPER FASTENER AND HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,559, dated March 15, 1898.
Application filed December 5, 1896. Serial No. 614,554. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, PATRICK J. A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Fasteners and Hangers, of whichthe following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to paper fasteners and hangers; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simplein construct-ion and operation and by means of which separate sheets of paper-- such as bills, letters, and other and similar documents-may be fastened together and also, when desired, suspended from any suitable support, a further object being to provide a device of this class which will serve as an ordinary file for the letters, bills, and other documents.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a blank from which my improved paper fastener and holder is made; Fig. 2, a sectional side view showing the device completed and showing a paper or papers connected therewith; Fig. 3, a'front view of the device shown in Fig. 2 and showing a hanger connected therewith, and Fig. 4 a side or front view of the hanger.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference throughout the several views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a paper fastener and holder which is formed from the blank 5, (shown in Fig. 1,) said blank being cut from a suitable sheet of spring metal. The blank 5 is oblong in form and provided near one end with a transverse slot or opening 6, and with a longitudinal slot 7, which extends throughout the greater portion of its length, and into which projects a springtongue 8, said spring-tongue 8 being secured to the end of the blank opposite to that in which the transverse slot or opening 6 is formed, and in forming the fastening device and holder the blank is folded at the middle, or at the dotted line 9, and the tongue 8 is passed through the transverse slot or opening 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and bent downwardly parallel with the adjacent side or front 10 of the holder, the folding of the blank 5 serving to form said front 10 of the holder and also the back 11. v
In practice the tongue 8 is inserted through the paper or papers 12 and then passed through the transverse slot or opening 6 and then bent into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the slot '7 extends along theback ll of the fastening device or holder thus formed and through the curved end thereof; and I also provide a hanger which consists of a spring-metal yoke 13, the ends of which are bent inwardly and upwardly, as shown at 14, so as to form loops or hooks, by means of which the hanger is connected with the fastening device, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
The yoke or hanger 13 is shown detached in Fig. 4 and connected with the fastening device in Fig. 3; but my improved fastening device may be used independently of the yoke or hanger, if desired, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A combined paper fastener and hanger comprising a metallic blank bent upon itself substantially midway of its ends, a slot formed in the blank extending from a point adjacent one end thereof to a point beyond the bend of the blank to form ears in the bend, a portion of the material from the slot being struck up from the blank and retaining its attachment thereto at one end to form a tongue lying normally within the slot, an opening in the opposite end of the blank adapted to receive the tongue and a hanger having its ends passed inwardly through the said ears and turned upwardly therebetween as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, inpresence of the subscribing witnesses, this 25th day of November, 1896.
PATRICK J. A. SMITH.
