Figure 2 is a plan of the same after it has passed through the first operation necessary to produce the edges.
Figure 3 is a transverse section of the same.
Figure is a, transverse section of the box when ready.

This invention relates particularly to that class of sheet-metal boxes which are made in cook form, and which are mostly used as lunch boxes. Thel invention consists in constructing the side pieces, and bottom or top of the box, out of one piece, by cuttingoirt a blank of the required shape, and turning the side pieces up gradually, insucha manner as to produce the required arms or iianges, and so that a box is obtained of superior strength and durability, and less expensive in labor than a similar box of the ordinaryl construction. A represents the blank which is intendedfo'r `the body of my box. The shape of this blank is best seen in iig. l. In order to bring this blank in the requisite form, the edges are' turned overand the Vback and front are curved, and then those edges, where the side pieces jointhe bettom, are turned up, by a suitable die or any other c'onvenient means, to the formsecond operation, which consists in turning ,the edges down to the position shown in iig. 4. This operation is carried out by means of a 'suitable tool, which catches over they edges",Y and turns the same down to the required position, andV which may be operated by hand or by suitable mechanism, or said operation may be performed entirely with the hammer, although inpracticetheuse of ,a suitable die or tool is preferable, because it saves much time, and producesbetterl work. B-y these means the rims; a, on the front and endsof' the box are obtained in the desired form, and said rims or flanges are strong and` durable, and no soldering-"is required in order to fasten the side pieces to the bottom. The top or cover, B, of my box may be made in the same manner as above described, leaving the side pieces shorter than those of the body of the box, as shown in fig.. 4, or said cover may be made in the usual manner.- It 'is obvious Vthat a box .of this description can be made of any suitable material, although thesame will be generally made of trimmed sheet iron.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The struck-up anged sides of the body A, of the shape herein described, for the purpose specified.
