COMBINATION SUIT.

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY W. PRESCOTT, OF HYDE PARK, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINATION-SUIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,110, dated February 15, 1898.
Application filed October 237, 1896. Serial No. 609,841. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. PRESCOTT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Hyde Park, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination-Suits, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.
The object of my invention is to produce a combination-suit which shall be an entirety and which shall have an elastic union portion around the waist to render easier the putting on and off of the suit. In putting on and off a combination-suit which has no elasticity at the waist it requires much more effort, and, besides, if done in a hurry it is likely to result in ripping or tearing the garment. This is especially true in case of firemen, who have to dress hurriedly.
My invention consists in a combination-s uit comprising a coat and trousers, both opening in front and permanently secured together by an elastic portion, which forms the waistband of the trousers, also opening in front, the elastic waistband forming the entire union between the coat and the trousers.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front perspective of a combination-suit embodying my in vention, with the coat and the fly of the trousers thrown open to show more clearly the waistband. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, enlarged.
In the drawings, a is the coat, I) the trousers, and c the elastic band. The upper edge of the band 0 is permanently secured to the inside of the coat a at the waist portion, and the lower edge of said band is permanently secured to the upper edge of the trousers. The band 0 opens in front, as well as the coat a and fly d of the trousers, to permit the putting on and 0E of the garment. I have specially intended the suit to be made of Waterproof materialsuch as rubber-coated cloth, oil-skin,or mackintosh-cloth-but other kinds of goods may be used. The elastic band or union should be either pure gum-rubber or elastic rubber webbing or goring. Whenthe garment is made of rubber-coated cloth, the preferable method of uniting the elastic gor- 5o ing to the coat is by vuloanizing rather than by sewing, because the stitches will show on the back. In the drawings the folded band f represents a rubber-coated strip with the folded edge uppermost and vulcanized to the inside of the coat at g. The elastic goring 0 may be sewed to the lower edge of the band for inserted between the two folds and sewed,
as it will not be exposed, and there is therefore no special advantage in vulcanizing it. The stitches are shown at it; also, the lower edge of the elastic band or goring c is sewed to the upper edge of the trousers, as at Z, because it will not be exposed, as the tail of the coat will hang down and conceal the entire band. At or near thefront ends of the band 0 it is best to stay the band by rivets or eyelets a through the band and coat to prevent tearing down at the corners.
What I claim as my invention is-- A combination-suit comprising a coat and trousers both opening in front and permanently secured together by an elastic portion which forms the waistband of the trousers, also opening in front, the said elastic waistband forming the entire union between the coat and the trousers, substantially as described.
