SPRING-SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,076, dated February 15, 1898. Application filed May 14, 1897. Serial No.'636,497. (No model.)

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HANSON, of Two Harbors, in the county of Lake and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Supports and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledi-n the art to which it appertains to'make and use the same.

The object of the invention is to dispense with the formation or application of shoulders or strips for the support of the bedspring, and thereby obviate the construction of projections on which dust and dirt will collect and vermin breed and congregate.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a bed, showing a woven-wire spring in connection therewith supported by the improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line w m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the parts of the attachment disconnected.

Referring to the drawings, wherein similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views, the numeral 1 designates the side rails of a bed to which the attachment is preferably applied, though if found necessary it may also be attached to the head and foot board at a proper level thereon. It is also believed that the best results will ensue by using two of the attachments on the inner side of each side rail, and at the points where the attachment is applied the side rails are formed with recesses 2, the construction of the device as shown demanding two of these recesses,which are arranged in vertical alinement. Movably fitted in the recesses 2 are collars 3, integrally formed or secured to a pintle 4, having at its lower end a right-angularly-projecting arm 5 with an upwardly-projecting lug 6 at its outer end, forming a seat to be engaged by the bars of the woven-wire spring, as shown in Fig. 1.' Over the said pintle 4 and its 001- lars 3 is mounted a keeper-plate 7, having a semicylindrical recess 8 therein to permit free movement of the said pintle and also provided with slots 9, extending therethrough to provide for the projections formed by the collars 3. The said keeper-plate 7 is secured to the inner side of the rail and is so located as not to interfere with the positioning of the spring in the bed-frame, and when not in use the arms can be readily turned back against the side rails. The collars 3 form strong auxiliaries in supporting the weight of the spring which is brought to bear upon the arms 5, and, though the construction shown is preferred, it is obviously apparent that one collar can be used without detracting from the utility or advantages of the device, and of course all the parts of the attachment may be properly proportioned to fit different-sized bed-frames and springs used in connection therewith. Another advantage of the attachment is that the spring will be held in its normally-adjusted position by the formation of the arms 5, as stated. Other advantages will appear from time to time to those using the device, and in its construction it is intended that malleable iron will be used and thereby increase its strength. It is observed that no shoulders or projections are formed below the spring-frame, and through this arrange- I ment the bed can be kept clean and free from insects or vermin.

Having thus described-the invention, what is claimed as new is- In combination with a bed -frame with alined recesses therein, of a pintle having collars thereon engaging said recesses and provided with an an gularly-extending arm at the lower end, and a keeper-plate mounted over said pintle and provided with slots to engage the said collars, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
