G. HOCHSTRASSER. MATCH AND CIGARETTE BOX.
N0. 596,970, Patented Jan. 4, 1898.
UNITED STATES PATENT price.
GOTTLIEB IIOCHSTRASSER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO ANNIE HUMANN, OF SAME PLACE.
MATCH AND CIGARETTE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,970, dated January 4, 1898.
Application filed May 20, 1893. Serial No. 474,979. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB I-Iocnsraas- SEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and use ful Match and Cigarette Box; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a novel construction in a box for matches and the like, the object being to provide a box from which the matches, cigarettes, and the like can be partially ejected in an easy manner.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a box constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the position of the two members in ejecting a match. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the position of the two members when filling the box. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one of the members in detail.
Referringnow to said drawings, A and B indicate the two members of the match-box, the member A being the box or receptacle for holding the matches and the member 13 being the cover and match-ejector. The two members are pivoted together at one end, and in ejecting the matches are to be moved relatively to each other upon such pivotal connection, and therefore the free ends of said members are curved, such curvature being the arc of a circle with such pivot as the center. The pivot 1 preferably passes through projections 2 and 3 upon the members A and B, and the cover 13 consists of a flat piece of metal, and at its free end is provided with a flange 11, which overlaps the free end of the box A and serves to hold such free ends of the members together.
The box A has a back piece 4: and the four side pieces 5, 6, 7, and 8, while the front of the box A is open, except for the inwardlyprojecting flanges 9 and 10 at the upper and lower ends of the box. These flanges 9 and 10 project inwardly from the top and bottom end pieces 5 and '7 and serve to retain the matches Within the box. In the top of the box and at one side thereof is an opening to permit the ejection of the matches, and by means of a spring 12, located within the box and pressing against the other side of the box and against the matches, the said matches are held against the side of the box and under the opening in the end thereof. In the bottom piece 7 of the box and opposite the opening for the ejection of the matches is an opening 13, and a curved slot 14: is made in the flange 10, leading from said opening 13.
The cover or member 13 is provided at its lower corner, that is located adjacent to the opening 13 when the parts are flat against each other, with a lug 15, Fig. at, that stands within said opening 13.
\Vhen the match-box is to be filled, the cover B is swung to the right from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 3. The open side of the box is thus exposed and by compressing the spring 12 the matches can be inserted, and the spring will press them against the other side of the box. The cover B is then swung back to the position shown in Fig. 1. hen a match is to be ejected, the box can be simply held between the thumb and first finger, and then by moving the cover B to the position shown in Fig. 2 the lug 15 passes into the box through the slot 14 and encounters the end of the match held against the side piece 8 of the box, and this match will be pushed upwardly through the opening 16 in the upper end of the box, where it can be removed. The parts can then bereturned to the position shown in Fig. 1, and the spring 12 presses another match into position to be ejected.
It is obvious that the box can be made to contain other articles, such as cigarettes and the like, and that various mechanical changes can be made without departing from my in vention.
I claim as my invention- 1. A box of the kind specified comprising two members A and B of approximately the same size and shape pivoted together near one end by a transverse pivot, whereby the members slide upon each other, said member A consisting of a box open. at one side and having an opening at one end for the passage of matches, and provided with a spring for pressing matches toward the side of the box at which said opening is located, and said member B consisting of a fiat plate or cover located over the open side of said box to close the same and provided with a lug extending into the box opposite the opening in the end thereof, and adapted to engage a match and push the same through said opening in the end thereof, substantially as described.
2. A box of the kind specified, comprising a box or member A open at one side, an opening in the end of said box, a spring for pressing matches or the like toward the side of said box at which said opening is located, a cover or memberB movably secured to the open side of said box or member A and provided with a lug or projection adapted to enter said box opposite said opening, and a flange on one of said members embracing said other member, substantially as described.
3. A box of the kind specified, comprising a box or member A open at one side and curved at one end, an opening in one end of said box for the ejection of matches and the like, a spring for pressing matches and the like toward the side of said box at which said opening is located, an opening 13 in the other end of the box and opposite said opening for the ejection of matches and the like, a cover or member 13 pivoted at one end to the open side of said box, a curved flange on the free end of said cover or member B to embrace the curved end of said box or member A, and a lug or projection on said cover or member 13 to enter said opening 13, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
