FILING-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 595,982, dated December 21, 1897.

Be it known that I, THoMAs WAEING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Camden, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Filing-Cases, of which lthe following is a specification. l

The object of myinvention is to so construct a letter or document filing-case as to permit a ready inspection of its contents, a further object being to so combine the filing-case with a drawer that it can be readily set up therein in position for an inspection of its contents, a still further object being to securely fasten the cover of the case when the same is not in use, and a final object being to provide for the ready removal of the contents from a filled case and the equally ready insertion of a fresh set of index-leaves in said case. These objects I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of the drawer of a cabinet having my letter-filing case contained therein. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the case set up in the drawer so as to permit ready inspection of its contents. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2, and Figs. 4 and are views illustrating the operation of the retainer for the index-leaves. Fig. 6 is a detail face View of the turnbuckle and catch.

with intervening transverse space 4, while projecting inwardly from each of the sides of the drawer are loops or hooks 5, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

The file or case consists of a base 6 and oppositefsides 7 and 9, one or both of these sides, preferably both of them, being hinged to the said base. A cover 10 is hinged to the upper edge of the side 9 and has a hooked or bent plate 11, which catches over the upper edge of the side 7 of the case and thus serves to hold the two sides of said case firmly in their proper relation to each other.

Pivoted to the outer end of the side 7 of the case is a turnbuckle 12, which, when turned in over the cover 10, effectually prevents such raising of the same as would free the hooked catch 11 from engagement with the upper edge of the side 7 of the case. The catch 11 projects slightly beyond the outer face of the hinged lid 10, and hence will engage with the turnbuckle 12 when the same is moved inward and exercise such restraining influence on said turnbuckle as to prevent the accidental outward movement of the same to such an extent as to release thecover 10.

Hooked rods 13 are secured to the side 9 of the case and engage with the loops or hooks 5 on the opposite sides of the drawer, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

Secured to the bottom of the case is a plate 14, with upwardly-bent ends, and through these ends passes a rod 15, to which are hung tabs at the inner ends of the index-sheets 16 of the file-case,one end of the rod 15 being bent backward upon itself and having a hooked end contained in a recess 17 in the base, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to prevent the withdrawal of the rod from its engagement with the bent ends of the plate 14 and with the tabs on the index-sheets. When, however, the file is filled and it is desired to remove these index-'sheets with the interposed letters or other documents, the hooked end of the rod 15 is withdrawn from the recess 17, so that said rod can then be drawn out longitudinally, as shown in Fig. 5, until the tabs of all ofthe index-sheets are released and said sheets can be removed from the file, the rod 15 being reinserted after a new set of index-sheets has been put in place in the le.

The opposite sides of the iile-case have at one end skeleton guards 18,in order to prevent displacement of the contents of the file, and hinged to the base of the file, near lone edge of the same, is a plate 19, having at the upper end a bent-wire thumb-piece 20.

When the file-case is in the drawer, it occupies the position as shown in Fig. 1, and when it is desired to gain access to the interior of the file the same 'is first drawn o ut longitudinally to an extent permitted by the hooked wires 13 and loops or hooks 5 and then turned upwardly or at right angles to the drawer, the base of the file iitting into the space 4 between the transverse strips 2 and 3 on the bottom of the drawer, as shown in Fig. 2. The turnbuckle 12 is then thrown outward and the cover 10 thrown back, so that the opposite sides of the file are permitted to fall apart, as shown in Fig. 2, thus freely exposing the contents of the le, the

outward-swinging movement ot' the side 9 being restricted by the hooked wires 13 and the outward-swinging movement of the side 7 being restricted by contact with the front of the drawer, as shown in Fig. 2.

The plate 19, with its thumb-piece 20, provides a ready means of throwing over onto the side 9 of the iile-case a mass of indexsheetsor other papers which may be resting upon the plate 19, so that the handling of the edges of the sheets themselves is rendered UDIlGCBSSZLIy.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a drawer having on the bottom transverse strips with intervening space, with a tile-case mounted so as to slide longitudinally in said drawer and capable of being` turned up therein so that its base will enter the space between said transverse strips on the bottom of the drawer, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of a drawer having on the bottom of the same transverse strips with intervening spaee,with a file-case mounted in said drawer so as to be longitudinally movable therein and so as to be capable of being turned up at right angles to the drawer, said case comprising a base portion adapted to tit into the space between the transverse bars on the bottom of the drawer, and sides one or both hinged to said base portion so as to fall outwardly when the file-case assumes an upright position in the drawer, substantially as specied.

3. The combination of the drawer, with a file case movable longitudinally in said drawer and free to be turned up at right angles to the drawer, with stops for limiting the longitudinal movement of the file-case in the drawer, substantially as specified.

5. The combination of a drawer having on the bottom of the same transverse strips with intervening space, a file-case consisting of a base and sides one or both hinged thereto, said file-case being mounted so as to slide lon gitudinally in the drawer and capable of being turned up at right angles thereto so that its base will enter the space between the transverse strips on the bottom of the drawer, with stops for limiting the outward movement of the case in the drawer, substantially as specified.

6. The combination of the opposite sides and hinged cover of a iile-case, said hinged cover having a hooked catch engaging the upper edge of one of the sides of said case, with a turnbuckle hung to the edge of said side of the case and overlapping the hinged top and retaining the same and its hooked catch in a closed position, substantially as specified.

The combination of a le-case having a base with recess therein, index-sheets having perforated tabs at their inner ends, and a retaining-rod passing through said perforated tabs and bent back upon itself at one end, said bent end terminating in a hook which enters the recess in the base of the {ile-case, substantially as specified.
