L. D. SHRYOGK. v WRENCH FOR'OIL WELL TOOLS.
No. 595,975. Patented Dec. 21, 1897.
mmmm: C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD D. SHRYOOK, OF MARIETTA, OHIO.
/ WRENCH FOR OIL-WELL TOOLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 595,975, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed August '7, 1897.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEONARD D. SHRYooK, of Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches for Oil- Well Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to a wrench for oil- Well tools; andthe object thereof is to provide an implement of simple and improved construction for supporting a drill or other tool and for rotating the same when connecting with a rope socket or casing. I
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge View. Fig. 4 is a front view, partly in section. Fig. 5 is a detail View of the wrench proper removed from the support. Fig. 6 is a detail view illustrating the hinged connection between the wrench and its support.
Handle Ais adapted to-be supported with a derrick or other structure by rope B, secured to eyelet A, and at the end of the handle is a bifurcated head 0, and the interior of this head is circularly recessed.
D designates a circular carrier open on one side at D to correspond with the outline of the bifurcated head, so that the wrench may readily embrace the drill or other tool, and formed in the edge of this carrier is a continuous groove E, where it is embraced by head C. Y
The carrier is thus securely held, but afforded free rotation within the head.
Wrench proper,F,is suspended centrally beneath the head and carrier, the wrench on its upper side having ears G, which are pivotally connected by bolts Gtolugs H, depending from the carrier. These bolts are grooved Serial No. 647,456. (No model.)
longitudinally at g and circumferentially adjacent their heads, as indicated at-g. Extended through one of the ears G is binding-screw h, which works in groove 9 as the bolt G is moved in and out, the closed end of the groove preventing the bolt from slipping entirely out, while when pushed in the screw engages groove 9 when the bolt is turned, and is thus held from retraction. The wrench is also open at one side, so that when the open sides of the head, the carrier, and the wrench are alined the drill maybe readily inserted. The wrench is readily turned by handles I, projecting outward from opposite sides, and the pivotal mounting just described aifords the wrench vertical oscillation,so that the same may conform to the position of the drill or other tool being operated upon.
In uniting light tools, where a support is unnecessary, the wrench proper may be removed from the carrier, as indicated in Fig. 5, and alone applied to the tool, the latter being held in raised position and at the same time rotated by the operator.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of support 0, head D horizontally rotatable therein, and wrench F beneath and in line with head D and secured thereto by horizontally-jointed connections, whereby the wrench is adapted to oscillate vertically with respect to the head, substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved implement of the character described, including a horizontally-rotatable support, and a wrench beneath and paralleling the support and pivotally united therewith so as to oscillate vertically with respect thereto, substantially as shown and described.
3. An improved wrench comprising a head or support, a carrier rotatably mounted therein, lugs depending from the carrier, awrench, lugs projected from the upper side thereof, and pivots uniting the lugs of the wrench and carrier, substantially as shown and described.
.4. An improved hinge connection for an implement of the character described, comprising the overlapping lugs having alined aperournferential groove, substantially as shown tures, a uniting-bolt grooved longitudinally and described. 10 and adjacent to its head grooved circulnfer- In testimony whereof I affiX my signature entially, and a screw or pin extended through in presence of two Witnesses.
