B. J. DOLAN. BURNER FOR BURNING RICH GASES, ESPECIALLY AOETYLENE GAS.
No. 595,848. Patented Dec. 21, 1-897.
f Y W\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ WITNESSES:
INVENTOR ATTORNEY .NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD J. DOLAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE ACETYLENE HOUSE LIGHTING COMPANY, OF WEST VIRGINIA.
BURNER FOR BURNING RICH GASES, ESPECIALLY ACETYLENE GAS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 595,848, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed April 2 9 1 89 7.
To all whom it may concern,-
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. DOLAN, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burners for BurningRich Gases, especially Acetylene Gas, of which the following is a full, true, and exact descriptiomreference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an. improved burner for burning gases rich in hydrocarbon, and especially for burning acetylene gas, its object being to produce practically a smokeless flame and a burner which in practice will not become choked or clogged by dep0sited carbon. In accomplishing this result I mingle or surround the gas to be consumed with a suitable amount of air before such gas is brought to the kindling temperature or point of combustion.
In my drawings similar letters refer to similar parts.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of my improved burner, in part broken away; Fig. 2, a cross-section through Fig. 1 at right angles to the view shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a plan view of the top of the burner. A represents any suitable standard communicating by suitable gas-passages with the gas-outlets B. These outlets are inclined toward each other at such an angle as that the jets will meet at or immediately above the top of the burner, where, impinging upon each other, they form a flat flame in the wellknown manner. They are located at the bottom of or in transverse passages parallel With the direction in which the jet is inclined. The efiect of this arrangement is that air enters at the outside of these passages O and surrounds the jet of gas, which, however, is
not kindled until it escapes from or passes above the upper surface D of the burner. The result of this seems to be that the gas is surrounded on all sides with a body of air, which prevents its immediate contact with Serial No. 634,376. (No model.)
the burner-body until it has passed above the surface of the burner. In order to supply an additional amount of air, I also cut a transverse passage E at right angles to the passage 0, and air entering through this channel tends to force or raise the flame upward at the center. As shown, these channels may be all arranged in a suitable block of any of the materials ordinarily employed for making gas-tips. I do not limit myself, however, to this specific arrangement; nor do I regard the channel E as an essential part of my invention, though it is beneficial.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a gas-burner of two gas-jets inclined toward each other and located at or near the bottom of a horizontal slot, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a gas-burner of two gas-jets inclined toward each other and located at or near the bottom of a horizontal slot, and having an opening to the atmosphere at or about the level of the burner-openings, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a gas-burner of two jets inclined toward each other and located at or near the bottom of a horizontal slot, and a transverse slot intersecting the first slot at or about its middle, substantially as described.
4. The combination in a gas-burner of two jets inclined toward each other and'located at or near the bottom of a horizontal slot, and a transverse slot intersecting the first slot at or about its middle, both of said slots having openings to the atmosphere at about the level of the burner-openings, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD J. DOLAN.
