To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY S. MADDOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Closet Bowls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in water-closet bowls, and is designed especially to provide means, as hereinafter described and claimed, for flushing the surface or guard wall of the water-inlet passage, which is located at the rear of the bowl and which is liable to become soiled when the bowl is in use.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of a bowl embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents an interior face View showing the guard-wall and its flushing device.

Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates the main body portion of the bowl provided with a flushing-rim a, which supplies water thereto through the customary series of slits or openings b and the siphon s, the leg of which opens into the lower part of the bowl. At the rear of the bowl a guard-wall 01, forming a waterinlet passage 0, extends downwardly as a continuation or extension of the inner flange of the flushing-rim. It is preferably carried down below the water-level, as shown, thereby lessening the noise due to the outrush of air from the passage when the closet is started and serves to drive the contents of the bowl Serial No. 640,324. downward toward and into the mouth of the siphon-leg.

To flush the guard-wall d, I provide the flushing-rim with a small supplemental Wall or partition e, forming therewith a narrow chamber or compartment f, open at its lower end and discharging directly upon the outer surface of the guard-wall. This chamber f communicates with the water-supply by means of a jetopening n, entering at its upper part and directed against the wall d, so that the jet of water passing through the opening at impinges against said wall and is thereby spread out and deflected downwardly in the shape of a broadened sheet, which issues upon the guard-wall e, as indicated in Fig. 3.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A water-closet bowl having a siphon-leg opening into its lower part, and an annular flushing-chamber around its rim, said chamber having at its rear portion a water-inlet passage, and passages for the outlet of water all around the inner periphery of the bowl, the rim of the chamber in front of the inletpassage being extended down on the inner side of the bowl to form a jet-partition for driving the bowls contents toward and into the mouth of the siphon-leg, an opening in said partition opposite the inlet-passage into the chamber, and a short supplemental partition overlying said opening and a portion only of the length of the jet-partition and forming a fan to wash the front surface of said partition only; substantially as described.
