UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES ALFRED WEBSTER, OF INDEPENDENCE, IOWA.
BLOWPlPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 594,922, dated December 7, 1897.
Application filed March 12, 1897. Serial No. 627,174. (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES ALFRED WEB- STER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Buchanan and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blowpipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in blowpipes in which a lamp or feeder is used to supply the gases, which are directed in a jet or flame, for use especially by jewelers and dentists, although it may be used in any case or for any purpose where it would operate effectively.
The object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character which will direct a flame of any desired size, which can be readily accommodated to the work, which is clean and will not soil the'hands orclothing of the user, and which is simple, inexpensive, and practical.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a blowpipe embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my device complete, and Fig. 2 represents a vertical central sectional view thereof.
In the drawings, A designates the lamp or reservoir for containing gasolene or other liquid from which an inflammable gas can be produced, provided with a cap B, to which leads the blowpipe C, and also passing through the cap and down into the reservoir is the pipe or tube D. The pipe or tube D leads to the metal hand-pipe E, with which communicates the horizontally-disposed pipe F, passing through which is the stem or rod G, to one end of which is connected the jam-nut H, which operates against the washer J to secure the disk K, carried by the other end of the rod, and bring any one of the openings L in said disk opposite the outlet or discharge opening M of the disk N, which closes the end of the tube or pipe. It will be noted that the outer disk has a series of openings of varying sizes, any one of which may be brought in line with the openings in the stationary disk to cause a jet of any desired size to be diinlet of the flame-pipe is a netting Q, and in the mouth of the flame-pipe, adjacent to the netting, is a plug of porous material, such as raw cotton, like R.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my blowpipe will be readily understood, but, briefly stated, is as follows: ,Air is forced into the tank or reservoir through the blowpipe, making a gas, which is then forced upward through the tube and hand-pipe and outward through the horizontally-disposed pipe and the flame-pipe, and when such gas is ignited the flame may be directed in any size upon the object which is being operated upon, as will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters.
In a blowpipe the combination of the vaporconducting pipe, the pipe communicating with the upper end of the vapor-pipe, having one end closed and the other end provided with a cap having a single opening, and a stem or rod passing through said pipe carrying at one end a jam-nut and at the other end a disk provided with a series of openings to register with the opening of the pipe and a flame-pipe having its free end adjacent to the openings of thedisk.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES ALFRED WEBSTER. Witnesses:
ROLAND B. FIESTER, FRANK JENNINGS.
