UNITED STATES PATENT FFicE.
JOHNlRlGE, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,7 55, dated November 30, 1897.
Application filed June 5, 1897. Serial No. 639,583. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PRICE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Oil and Grease Cup; and I do declare. the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical section through cup on line x m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan View of cup with the top cover removed; and Fig. 3 is a section on line y y, Fig. 1.
This invention is designed to provide an improved oil and grease cup of that class wherein the oil or other lubricant is delivered to the parts to be lubricated in certain quantities and intermittently; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the body of the cup, which consists of an open-ended glass cylinder. Metal may, however, be employed.
B designates the bottom cap or cover plate, which is formed with a rim-flange b,which fits around the lower portion of the cup, with a packing b. It also has a central opening 19 which extends through an external neck or boss B. Said neck or boss is formed with a portion B fitted to form a wrench-seat, and also with a smaller externally-threaded portion B by means of which it may be screwed into the oil-hole of the part to be lubricated.
The cup is provided with an inner skeleton top 0, having a rim-flange c, which fits around the upper port-ion thereof, with a packing 0. Connecting the arm 0 of this skeleton top with the bottom cap are two tierods D, by means of which said top and the bottom cap are both secured to the cup. Said arm 0 is formed with a central hollow externally-threaded boss 0 upon which screws a cover E, having a central hollow cylindric portion E, which extends both above and below it and which is formed with an internal thread to fit the said boss and also to fit the external thread of an adjusting sleeve-nut G.
H designates the valve rod or plunger, which extends entirely through the cup, its lower end portion projecting through the neck 13 and its upper portion extending up through'the boss 0 the cover E, and the nut G. Said rod' or plunger has near itslower end an enlarged portion h,whioh forms a stop to limit its downward movement or drop, and also forms the valve which closes the opening leading out through the neck 13*. At its upper portion it has another enlargement h, which is designed by its contact with the inner end of the said nut G to limit the upward movement or throw of the rod or plunger.
It will be readily seen that by adj usting the nut Gin its bearing in the cover E the amount of throw of said rod or plunger can be accurately controlled. The desired adjustment when obtained is secured by means of a winged lock or jam nut K, which is placed on the sleeve-nut and is designed to be screwed down against the upper end of the portion E of the cover. By making the valve-rod or plunger extend up through the cover, as shown and described, its actioncan be readily inspected or determined at any time. It will also be noted that both the adjusting-nut G and its lock-nut K are carried by the cover E, and that when said cover is'removed for the purpose of filling the cup the nuts are removed therewith without in any manner disturbing their adjustment. This is an important advantage, since not only does it do away with a readjustment eachtime the cup is filled, but it does away with the difficulty and uncertainty of securing the same adjustment each time. The cover E is also provided with an oil-hole M, which is closed by meansof a small spring arm or plate M. When oil is to be used instead of a more heavy lubricant, the cup can be refilled by means of this hole without unscrewing the cover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An oil or grease cup having a skeleton top, acover screwed to a central boss of said top, a reciprocatory valve-rod or plunger extending loosely through the said boss and cover and above the same into exposed position, and means carried by the said cover for regulating the throw of the said rod or pl unger, substantially as described.
2. In an oil or grease cup, the skeleton top having a central, hollow, externally-threaded boss, a cover having a central hollow internally-threaded cylindric portion adapted to screw upon the said boss, a sleeve-nut also screwed into the said cylindric portion, alocknut for securing the adjustment of the sleevenut, and a reciprocating Valve-rod or plunger which extends up through the said boss, the cover, and the sleeve-nut, and having an enlarged portion designed to contact with. the inner end of said sleeve-nut, substantially as specified.
3. In an oil or grease cup, the skeleton top having a central, hollow, externally-threaded boss, a cover having a central, hollow, internally-threaded, cylindric portion adapted to screw upon the said boss, a sleeve-nut also screwed into the said cylindric portion, a locknut for securing the adjustment of the sleevenut, and a reciprocating valve-rod or plunger which extends up through the said boss, the cover and the sleeve-nut, and which has an enlarged portion designed to contact with the inner end of said sleeve-nut, together with a bottom cap having a screw-neck, and tie-rods which connect said bottom cap with the said skeleton top, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN PRICE.
