Be it knownfthat I, BENJAMIN F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Somerville, Ain the coun-ty of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Track-Drilling Devices, of which the following, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in track-drilling machines for the purpose of drilling rails, girders, dac., and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l represents a top plan view of the device shown as connected to a railway-rail for drilling holes through the latter. Fig. 2 represents a cross-section on the line 2 2, shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a similar crosssection on the line 3 3, shown in Fig. 1. Fig. fl represents a detail bottom plan view of one of the hooked bars adapted to be hooked on the foot of the rail during the drilling operation. Fig. 5 represents a detail bottom plan view of the rest-bar and its back-rest. 6 represents an enlarged cross-section on the line 6 6, shown in Figs. l and 2; and Fig. 7 represents a similar'cross-section on the line 7 7, shown in Figs. l and 2.

In Figs. l, 2, and 3, A represents the rail to be drilled, and B B B represent the sleepers of a railroad-track, as usual. l
The drill-stock-supporting frame is composed of a pair of hooked bars C C, having hooked ends C C', adapted to be hooked on the outer side of the ange or base' portion of the rail, as shown. Each bar C is to be secured to the inner portion of the flange or base portion of the rail by means of an adjustable clamp D, having a perforation for receiving the screw-threaded clamping-bolt E, provided with a tightening-nut e, as shown. The said bolt is adjustable in a slotted perforation C in the bar C and is provided in its lower -end with a beveled head e', Which is longitudinally adjustable in a dovetailed groove C3 on the under side of the bar C, as shown.
By making the head e' of the bolt E bev- F, provided on its under side With corresponding longitudinal corrugations as shown.
The rest-bar F may be adj ustably secured to the hooked bars C by means of clamps G,
one end of which is made to rest on top of 'the rest-bar F, and the other end, Which is provided with corrugations g, is adapted to be interlooked with the corrugated surface C4v on the upper side of the bars C, as shown.
Each clamp G is secured in position to the rest-bar F and bar C by means of a screw-bolt H going through a perforation in the clamp G and through a slotted perforation C5, as shown. Said bolt H is provided with a beveled head 71,', which is longitudinally adjustable in a dovetailed groove C on the under side of the bar O, as shown.
h is an adj ustable tightening-nut on the screw-bolt H for the purpose of securing the clamp G to the bar C and rest-bar F, as shown.
By having the head h made beveled and adapted to it Within a correspondinglyshaped dovetailed groove C6 on the under side of the bar C said bolt His prevented from dropping out of the bar C when the nut h" is loosened during the adjustment of the restbar and their clamping devices.
I is the back-rest for the drill-stock, which is longitudinally adjustable on Ythe rest-bar F and secured to the latter by means of a setscrew c', as shown. I
K is the drill, as usual, inserted in the forward end of the drill-holder or drill-stock L. The drill-stock is of theusual construction, having a ring L surrounding it and adapted to be oscillated on said drill-stock and provided with a pawl-and-ratchet or frictionroller device, as is common in the art, for the purpose of imparting an intermittent rotary motion-to the drill during the rocking motion of the lever L", that is secured to the ring L.
L3 is a handle, as usual, secured in an adjustable manner to the lever L.

Misa wrench adapted to iit around a portion of the polygonal feed-sleeve N, by means of which the operator can adj ust said feed-sleeve N or hold it stationary while he turns the drillstock by means of the lever L", thus causing the drill to be fed forward from time to time, as may be required, without interrupting the drillin g operation.
The pointed end of the feed-sleeve N is adapted to rest against the back-rest I, as shown, said rest being preferably provided with longitudinal grooves t" for receiving such pointed end of thc said feed-sleeve, as is common in devices of this kind.
By having the rest-bar F adjustable relative to the hooked bars C C and the back-rest I adjustable on the said rest-bar the hooked bars C C may be secured to the rail without interfering with the sleepers B B, as shown, and by the employment of the clamps D D thel hooked bars C C are firmly secured to the railV Without the need of any device for supporting the rest-bar F in proper position above the sleepers.
The invention is very simple in construction, it can easily be applied to a rail, girder, rbc., to be drilled, and when not iu use it can be faken apart and stored or transported in a very small compass.
I'Iaving thus fully described the nature,con struction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claiml. In a track-drillin g device in combination, a pair of hooked bars adapted to be secured to the rail and having slots C, adjustable clamps D, clamping-bolts E each of which being provided with a nut e and having a beveled head e/ adjustable in a dovetailed groove G3, on the under side of the respective bars C, C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a track-drilling device in combination, a pair of hooked bars adapted to be secured to the rail, an adjustable rest-bar grooved on its under side and adapted to intermesh with a correspondingly-corrugated surface on the hooked bars, an adjustable clamping device corrugated on its under side adapted to interlock with the corrugated portion of the hooked bar and a clamping-bolt and nut, said bolt having a beveled head iitting in a corrospondingly-shaped groove on the under side of the hooked bar substantially as and for thc purpose set forth.
