To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLOAHBY F. HoL- LISTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gowen, in the county of Webster and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to improvements in stirrups for saddles for horseback-riding.

The object is to provide a spring-stirrup for this purpose; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings the same figures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.

.Figure 1 is a side elevation of a saddle with my improved stirrup attached thereto; and Fig. 2 is a detached view, partly in section, of the fender-leather with its sleeve and spring.

1 is the ordinary riding-saddle; 2, the stirrup-strap; 3, the spring, and 4: the stirrup. The upper end of the spring 3 is bent transversely across the spring to form a bar 5, upon which is mounted a roller-sleeve 6. Its end is then bent downwardly inside of the coil of the spring, the extreme end terminat ing in a hook 7. The lower end of the said spring is also bent transversely to form a bar 8, upon which is mounted a roller-sleeve 9,

which forms a bearing for the loop of the strap 10, secured to the stirrup, and the end of the stirrup-strap 2, after passing around the roller-sleeve 6 on the bar 5, is adjustably secured to the buckle 13 in the usual manner to permit the adjustment of the distance be tween the stirrup and the saddle.

14 is the fender-leather, and it is formed with an integral piping or sleeve 12, through which the spring passes and which acts as a guard or fender for the said spring.

When a person is about to mount, the hook 7 is temporarily secured to the sleeve 9 on the bar 8, so that in making the. mount in the usual manner the weight of the body is taken up by the hook, and after the person is seated if the pressure he removed from the stirrup for an instant the tension of the spring draws the bar 5 up to release it from the hook,which flies outwardly from the bar and permits the elasticity of the spring full play.

The advantages of the device are obvious and need no further description.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-

1. The saddle provided with the strap 2, in combination with the spring 3 formed at its upper end with the bar 5, having its free end turned downwardly through said spring and terminating in the hook 7 and the lower end of said spring formed with the bar 8 and the stirrup 1oop-strap 10 secured to said bar 8, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination with the saddle, the adjustable strap 2 secured thereto, the spring 3 secured at one end to said strap and secured at its other end to the stirrup of the fender 14:, formed with an integral sleeve encompassing said spring, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
