IMPROVEMENT IN FAUCETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,122, 'dated October 23, 1866.
To all 'whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. COOPER, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Faucets 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of faucets in which a valve operated by a screw-spindle is used for con trolling the flow of liquid through the faucet; and my improvement consists, in the manner described hereinafter, of forming a perfectly-tight and durable joint between the spindle and the cap through which it passes by means of an elastic packing, the use of which prevents undue friction, common to ordinary tightly-compressed and rigid packing.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which this invention appertains to make and use my invention, I will now proceed toV describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, Figure l is a vertical section of my improved faucet; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section on the line 1,2, Fig. l; and Fig. 3, a sectional plan on the line 3 4, Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
As regards external shape, the faucet is similar to those ot' ordinary construction, the interior being separated by a partition, a, into the receivingchamber A and delivery-chamber B, the latter having a direct communication with the interior of a cylindrical chamber, C, which contains the valve D. This valve consists of the upper and lower disks, c and f, connected together by two narrow strips, h 7L, the whole being cast in one piece.
In the disk e of the valve is a hole, with internal screw-threads adapted to the threads O11 the screwed portion 7c of the valve-spindle E, which is furnished with a suitable handle, w, and to the disk f of the valve is secured the gum-elastic washer m, arranged to bear on the partition a, and to cover the opening b in the same.
The interior of the projection C is ot' the shape best observed on reference to Fig. 3, the ribs h h of the valve tting freely in guiding-grooves, so that the valve is prevented from turning round, while it is raised or lowered by manipulating the spindle E.
To the top of the hollow projection C is screwed a cap, F, through which passes the spindle E. the latter having a beveled collar, n, adapted to a beveled recess in the under side of the cap, to which is also tted the annular piece p, of gum-elastic or other suitable materiahthe outer edge of the latter being confined between the upper edge of the pro-l jection C and the cap F, and the inner edge projecting into a groove, q, formed in the spindle E.
Gr is a coiled spring, the lower end of which rests on a shoulder, t, formed in the interior of the hollow projection C, the upper end of this spring bearing against the under side of the annular piece p, which is thus compressed against the collar a of the spindle E.
A perfectly-tight joint is thus formed for preventing any leakage between the spindle and the cap, and this without causing the undue friction which results in using a tightly-compressed and rigid packing.
The packing described is eflicacious and lasting, seldom requiring repairs or renewals, as the pressure of the spring G is continuous, and exerts no more force than sufficient to make a perfectly-tight joint.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hollow projection C, its spring G, eap F, annular packing-piece p, and collar n of the spindle E, the whole being arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
