UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KARL SCI-IIEK, OF STUTTGART, GERMANY.
DOOR-OPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,169, dated September 14, 1897. Application filedDecember 29, 1896. Serial No. 617,405- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, KARL SOHIEK, of Stuttgart, Kingdom of VViirtemberg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for opening a door by means of the foot; and it consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the arrangement attached to a door in elevation. Fig. 2 shows a partial view on a larger scale. Fig. 3 shows a plan view from above, and Fig. 4: shows a detail.
A bar Z; passes through a longitudinal slot ct, provided underneath in the door a. The said bar bears the step-plates c 0, one on each side of the door. The one plate ois connected to a lever (Z, which is attached at d revolubly to the door. The plate 0 is, moreover, articulated by means of a rod e to the handle f. The connection of the rod 2 to the handle f may be effected in any suitable manner. As shown inFig. 4, this maybe done by hooking the rod to the handle.
If the user treads with the foot upon the one or the other of the plates 0 c 011 the barb, working in the slot a, the handle or bolt of the door Will open. In order that the door may be still further pressed 'uponthat is to say, may open farther by itself-there is a plate 9, fastened either at the top to the door or sidewise to the same, which bears a spring h, pressing against the door-post.
By means of the plates 0 c I am enabled to open the door from either side.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A door-opener consisting of a bar 1) extending through a slot in the lower part of the door, foot-plates c c on said bar at either side of the door, a lever d to carry said bar and foot-plates said lever being pivotally attached to the door means for connecting the free end of said lever to the handle-lever of the door-lock and means for pushin'gvthe door open when the said foot-plates are depressed substantially as described.
2. The combination of a bar Z) extending through a slot'in the lower part of the door, foot-plates c c at either side of the door attached to said bar, a lever cl to carry said bar and foot-plates, said lever being pivotally attached to the door, means for connecting the free end of said lever to the handle-lever of the door-lock and a spring attached to the said door and adapted to press against the door-frame in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
