SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,966, dated September 14, 1897?. Application filed December 24, 1896. Serial No. 616,871. (No model.)

Be it known that I, IIENRY R. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reelfoot,

in the county of Lake and State of Tennessee,

have invented certain new and useful Iniproveinents in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- IO pertains to make and use the same.

This invention has reference to the novel construction in a nut-lock, the object being to provide a device whereby a nut canbe effectually looked upon a bolt and which is cspecially adapted for use in connection with bolts that are used to secure the fish-plates to rail-joints.

The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter described and claimed. In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure'l is a front elevation of a portion of a rail, fish plates, and bolts with this nut-lock applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the lockingplate.

Referring now to the drawings,1 indicates the rail; 2, the fish-plates; 3, the bolt, and l the nut, said parts being of ordinary construe} tion. Between the nut and the fish-plate is situated a keeper 5, consisting of a plate having an aperture 6 to receive the bolt and a headed pin 7 near the upper end thereof. This keeper 5 is adapted to be held rigidly and is provided with devices for engaging the part against which it is placed to prevent it from being turned. In the construction illustrated the said keeper 5 is provided with a flange 8 at its upper edge, that rests upon the upper 0 edge of the fish-plate. The locking-plate 9 is provided at one side with a notch 10 to fit over 'the nut. From the rear side of this notch 10 there are a plurality of open slots 11, provided with lateral extensions 12 at their inner ends.

These lateral extensions 12 all extend in one direction in the manner shown.

The manner in which the nut-look is'used is as follows: The keeper is placed upon the bolt, after which the nut is placed thereon and screwed up as tight as it can be. Then the locking-plate 9 is placed with the notch embracing the nut 4t and with the headed pin 7 opposite one of the open slots 11. The locking-plate is then moved to carry the headed pin to the rear end of the open slot, after which the nut is loosened slightly to carry the locking-plate to one side and thus receive the pin into the lateral extension of the slot. It

is obvious that the parts will be firmly held in this position until a wrench is applied to the nut to tighten the same and thus allow the plate to be removed as it was applied. The said locking-plate 9 is flat, so that by reversing the same it is applicable to either right or left hand screws. It is noted, of course, that the number of open slots 11 can vary without departing from the spirit of this invention.

Having thus described the invention,what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, isp I 1. In a nut-lock, a keeper having an opening to receive the bolt and provided with a pin and devices for holding it rigid with relation to the part to which it is applied, and aloe]:- ing-plate having a notch to receive the nut, and aplurality of open slots extending from said notch.

2. In a nut-lock, a keeper having an opening to receive the bolt and provided with a pin and devices for holding it rigid with relation to the part to which it is applied, a lockingplate having a notch to receive the nut, and

a plurality of open slots extending from said notch and provided with lateral extensions at their inner ends.

3. In a nut-lock, a keeper consisting of a plate provided with an opening to receive the bolt and having aheaded pin and a marginal flange, and a locking-plate provided with a notch to receive the nut and a plurality of open slots extending from said notch.
