W. H. H. & W. TABBERT.
GAR COUPLING.
No. 589,539. Patented Sept. 7,1897
N H i wimeoowz WW United States, residing at St. Ansgar, in the UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
XVILLIAM II. II. TABBERT AND \VILIILEM TABBERT, OF ST. ANSGAR, IOlVA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,539, dated September 7', 1897. Application filed April 26, 1897. Serial No. 634,053. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ILLIAM H. II. TAB- BERT and WTLHLEM TABBERT, citizens of the county of Mitchell and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Oar-Couplings; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Ourinvention has relation to improvements in automatic car-couplings; and the object is to provide a simple, durable, and reliable device of this class.
To this end thenovelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of our improved car-coupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, showing the pin elevated and in position for coupling; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the link coupled in the drawhead.
1 represents the draw-head, formed with a forwardly-inclined bottom 3 represents a transverse lever f ulcrumed on a bolt l, mounted in asupporting-bracket 5, fixed to the front end of the car. The inner end of said lever is provided with a vertical orifice G, which is in alinement with the corresponding coupling-pin orificesin the draw-head 1.
7 represents the coupling-pin, supported in the inner end of the lever 3 and extending downward into the draw-head.
8 represents a vertical guide-stud having its lower end supported in an arm 9, formed integral with the bracket 5, its upperend ex tending through a guide-orifice in the outer end of the lever El, and 10 represents a'spiral spring encompassing said stud and supporting the outer end of the lever.
12 represents the coupling-link, which is preferably of a solid form and provided with the vertical orifice 13 for the reception of the coupling-pin. The lower face 1% of the link is made sloping or inclined to correspond to the inclination of the bottom 2 of the drawhead, so as to insure the proper insertion of the link.
15 represents a depending arin fixed on the outer end of the lever 3, and its lower end is formed with a spring-clip 16, adapted to engage the stud 17 to retain the coupling-pin in an elevated position when uncoupling the car.
Although we have specifically described. the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of our invention, we do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of our invention without'departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A car-coupling comprising the draw-head 1, provided with the inclined bottom 2, the transverse lever 3, the coupling-pin 7, supported in the inner end of said lever, and the solid coupling-link 12, provided with the vertical orifice 13, and having a beveled lower face 1i, in combination with the fixed guidestud 8, the spiral spring 10 encompassing said stud and the locking-arm 15, provided with a spring-clip 16, to engage a stud 17, located on the car-body for holding the lever when uncoupling, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we hereunto affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. H. TABBERT. I WILHLEM TABBERT. \Vitnesses:
O. A. .IEGLUM, R. O. LUBIENS.
