BUGGY-TOP ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,324, dated August 31, 1897.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. WILBUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Girard, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Buggy-Top Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in buggy-top attachments.

The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted to be readily applied to any buggy-top without altering the construction thereof and adapted to break or set the braces and enable a buggy-top to be readily lowered or locked in a raised position.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a buggy-top attachment constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view showing the same applied to a carriage-bow and arranged to engage the brace.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.

1 designates a clamp composed of two plates or members provided at their inner faces with similar recesses 2, forming an elliptical opening and adapted to receive a carriage-bow 3. The opening 2 is arranged at the center ofthe clamp, and the latter is secured to the bow 3 by means of screws or bolts 4, which connect the plates or members at the ends thereof. This construction enables the device to be readily attached to a bugg *-top without altering the construction of any of the parts of the same.

The clamp is provided at one side of the elliptical opening with a perforation 5, disposed at right angles to the opening and passing through both of the plates or members and receiving a shaft 6. The shaft 6, which is j ournaled in the perforation 5, is provided at its inner end with a handle 7, and it has an L-shaped armS at its outer end for engaging a brace 9 to set the same or break the joint thereof. provided with a loop or ring which receives the handle 7, and the latter is provided with an annular groove which is engaged by the loop or ring.

The shaft 6, which is journaled in the perforation 5', is of sufficient length between the handle 7 and the arm 8 to have a limited longitudinal -movement, in order to withdraw the engaging portion of the arm 8 from the plane of the brace 9, to enable it to be arranged above or below the brace, accordingly as it is desired to set or break the joint. By this construction the L-shaped arm 8 is also adapted to operate in advance and in rear of the bow 3.

WVhen the L-shaped arm is arranged beneath the brace, it can be readily drawn inward and rotated partially and then moved outward to bring its engaging portion over the brace, as will be readily understood.

Each brace of the buggy-top is designed to be provided with a device for operating the joint, so that the occupant of a vehicle may raise and lower the top when the curtains are down without inconvenience.

It will be seen that the device is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to be readily applied to a carriage-top without perforating a bow or any portion thereof, and that it will enable a carriage-bow to be readily set or the joint thereof broken.

What I claim is A buggy-top attachment comprising a sectional clamp, and a shaft loosely journaled in a perforation of the clamp and provided at its outer end with an L-shaped arm and having a handle at its inner end, said shaft being of a sufficient length to have a limited longitudinal movement to permit the engaging arm to be withdrawn from the plane of the brace of a buggy-top in order that it may engage the said brace above or below the same, substan tially as and for the purpose described.
