SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,077, dated August 31, 1897.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN P. ELKJER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pennock, in the county of Kandiyohi and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletree-I-Iooks, of Y which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to means for preventing the accidental disengagement of the cockeye of a tug from the whifiietree-hook when in service.

'In accordance with this invention a lockdisk is fitted to the whifiletree-hook, soas to be readily removed, and is rotatable at the will of the operator to permit of the tug being coupled to or detached from the hook, an edge of the lock-disk being of superior weight whereby, under normal conditions, the space between the bill and the shankof the hook is closed to retain the cockeye in engagement with the hook. j

The style of the whiffletree-hook-and the lock-disk may be of any pattern to suit the design of the manufacturer. Hence in adapting the invention to any particular make of whiflietree-hook various changes in the form, proportions, and the minor detailsof construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.

For a full understanding of the merits of the invention and the construction and operation thereof reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a whiiiletree-hook, showing the manner of applying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a whiffletree-hook having the lock-disk removed. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the lock-disk. Fig. lis a perspective view of ,the lock-disk.

Corresponding and like parts are indicated in the views of the drawings and in the following description by the same referencecharacters.

The whifdetree-hook 1 may be linked to the ferrule, as shown in Fig. 1, or formed therewith, as indicated in Fig. 2, and its shank is enlarged, forming an annular shoulder or stop 2, and formed with or applied to the shank adjacent to the part 2 is a lug 3, the latter being preferably located on the side of the shank remote from the hill 4.

A look disk or plate 5 has a central opening 6 of a size to receive the hook on which it slips, and a notch 7 .is located to one side of the opening and communicates therewith to admit of the lug 3 passing therethrough when placing the lock-disk upon the hook or removing it therefrom. The distance between the lug 3 and the shoulder 2 is sufficient to receive the lock-disk and admit of it turning freely. 1

An edge portion of the lock-disk is cut away, as shown at 8, so that when the cutaway part 8 is brought opposite the bill 4 the cockeye can be engaged with or removed from the hook. Upon turning the lock-disk so as to throw the part 8 away from the bill thespace between the bill land shank of the hook is closed, thereby preventing the slipping or accidental disengagement of the cockeye from the whiffletree-hook when coupled thereto. The edge portion of the lock-disk opposite the part 8 is made heaviest, so it will, when free, hang and occupy the lowest position, thereby holding the cutaway portion 8 uppermost and close the hook, as shown in Fig. 1. To remove or place the lock-disk in position, it must be turned to bring the notch 7 in register with the lug 3, and-after the latter is passed the lock-disk is turned to throw the notch 7 and lug 3 out of register when the lock-disk is held in place between the shoulder 2 and lug 3.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a whiifletree-hook having its shank provided with a shoulder or stop and a lug, of a lock-disk removably slipped upon the hook and having a notch at one side of the'opening through which the hook passes for the aforesaid lug to pass through, and having a cut-away portion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination with a whiffletree-hook, of a lock-disk loosely mounted upon the shank thereof so as to turn freely, and having its upper portion cut away-and its lower portion loci made heaviest, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In combination a whiflietree-hook having its shank provided with an annular shoulder or stop and a lug and a lock-disk having an opening to receive the hook and provided with a notch to one side of the opening for the aforesaid lug to pass through, and having its upper portion cut away and its lower portion made heaviest, substantially as described for 10 the purpose set forth.
