UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
, JAMES T. HOY'I, OF 'NEW' YORK, N. Y.
CABINET OR PAPER-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,066, dated August 10, 1897. Application led September 17, 1896. Serial No. 606,169. (No model.)
To all whom t my concern,.-
Be it known that I, JAMES T. I-IOYT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cabinets or Paper-Cases, of which the following is a specification. Y
By means of this invention a cabinet or case can be made of simple or cheap construction and easy of operation, as also capable of holding a considerable supply of paper or sheets; and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in thc annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the cabinet, showing its front or discharging wall. Fig. 2 is a section along x tc, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section along y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modication. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a sectional side elevation of another modification.
The cabinet or case comprises the sides 1, bottom 2, top 3, and back 4. The sides have tracks, ways, or grooves 5 for guiding the movable or sliding front or discharging' wall. By having the front flexible to fold or slide about within the limits of the sides 1 the device will not require excessive room for its operation. The front is shown composed of strips or sections 6, joined bya liexible backing 7. The front carries a wider strip or section 8, having a discharge-slit D for the delivery of sheets of paper and a linger-opening 10, giving access to roller 1l 12 for actuating the latter to start the discharge of a sheet.
The sheets or paper-pack 13 has 'a bottom or support 14 and a fastening or retaining strip or band 15, on which the sheets are strung or which passes through perforations near the rear edge of the sheets. The bottom orsupport 14 has a hook or catch 16, made to engage a lip 17 on a support or slide 18. When the back 4 is removed, the support 18 can be slid out of or into the case along the cleats or ways 19, which hold the support 1S somewhat clear of the case-bottom 2. When the support 1S with supply 13 is in place in the case, the strip or band 15 can be secured or looped to a cross-piece or holder 20, secured in the case. By making the retaining-strip 15 of thin or sheet metal and suitably slot-ting face for the linger inserted through opening 10 to rotate the roller. The roller portions 11, if roughened or sanded, will enable thev roller when suitably rotated to feed the sheets' through the discharge 9.
The roller 1l 12 is journaled in arms or vbearings 21, carried Vby thefront part or section 8, and as the pile of sheets 13 diminishes the front G S slides in guides 5 to allow the roller 1l 12 to sink lower, so as to come int-o contact with the sheet which is at the top of the pile. The discharge-opening 9 by this movement of the front is kept in alinement with or in discharging position for thev top sheet.
The axle of the roller 11 12 is shown guided by grooves or ways 22 in the case sides, and these grooves also form stops preventing eX- cessive motion of the roller and'of the casefront in an upward or downward direction. The support 1S being supported clear of the case-bottom 2 the lower edge of the front 6 can slip back into the case between said support and bottom.
As a considerable space inthe case can be made to receive paper, the supply of the latter can be correspondingly large.
The movement of the front 6 to keep the roller 11 12 moving to or in contact with the paper-supply7 can be effected in any suitable way, as by suitably weighting the roller or making the roller or contiguous parts so heavy as to automatically move and keep the roller in contact with the gradually-diminishing pile of sheets.
The top 3 and back 4 are shown removable, the back 4 when reni'oved clearing the way for the removal of top 3. When in place, the back 4 can be locked bysuitable means. The removal of back 4 and top 3 gives access to the interior of the case for supplying the latter with paper or for fastening the samefin place or for other purposes. The case is shown as secured by one of its sides to a wall or support 23.
Instead of being turned through finger- IOO only one roll ll l2 a pair or several rolls, oneA behind the other, can be applied, as known.
The condition or amount of supply in the case can be readily determined from the exterior without opening the case, lsince the location or elevation of the opening` orknob 24E or a sight through the opening IO will, for
example, indicate Whether the contents are exhausted or so nearly so as to make recharg-A ing advisable or necessary. It will thus be seen that the opening 10 or knob 24 acts as an indicator for determining the amount of supply in the case.
The holder l5 insteadof being arranged as in Fig. 2 might be otherwise arranged-as, for example, in Fig. 6, where a holder is carried by or movesvwith the wall 6 8 and pierces or engages the sheets or some of the upper sheets to prevent the roller l1 I2 from feeding more than one sheet at a time.
` Any suitable guard, (not shown,) as well 'known in the art, can be applied to prevent the leading edge of a sheet passing up between the front 8 and roller 11 12, whereby blocking of the passage is obviated.
It will be observed that the roller is carried by the front and is adapted to turn, but this roller is not translatable independently of the front-that is to say, the center or axis ot the roller cannot be displaced ormoved unless the front is also moved or slid. l What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A case or holder having a closed top, bottom, sides and back, and guides extended along inside the top, bottom and back, combined with a flexible front havin ga discharge slit or opening intermediate its ends, movable along said guides and of a length suicient to completely close the box irrespective of the position of the discharge slit or opening, a discharge-roller carried by and moving with said front, a support within the case, and a holder located within the boundaries of the guides, substantially as described.
2. A case or holder having a closed top, bottom, sides and back, combined with a flexible, movable front having a discharge-opening intermediate its ends and extending toward theback inside the top and bottom, a discharge-roller carried by and moving with said front, and a support and holder arranged in the case clear of its bottom and back to allow the front to travel past such support and holder, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES T.HOYT. Witnesses:
