ELLEN.GIFFORD ARCIIBOLD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y;
HAN D- GRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,634, dated August 3, 1897.
Application filed November 16 1896 To all whom, it llM/J/ concern:
Be it known that I, ELLEN GIFFoRD ARCH- BOLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Grips, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in to supply an efficient device of this character which is adapted for use either as a parcelcarrier or as an auxiliary attachment for a street-car strap, whereby it is not necessary to directly handle the ordinary leather strap, which is frequently in an unclean condition.
The device is simple in construction, inexpensive, and durable, and it can be readily carried in the pocket of a user.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described,-and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device, showing the same folded into the position ready for use as a means for carrying bundles. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the device adjusted into position for tional plan view taken on a line a; :20 of Fig. 3.
In the practice of my invention I form a bow A of resilient wire, preferably steel, the two adjacent ends a of the bow having grooves a formed therein and hooks (1. extended therefrom, which said hooks are preferably supplied at their ends with inwardly-turned loops a adapted for preventing the accidental displacement of the hooks from the string of a bundle with which they are adapted to engage.
Located within the grooves a. and pivotally attached by means of a pin C is a compound hook B, which said hook comprises a vertical portion b and hooked portions 1) and b the large hook Z2 having an inwardlyturned loop b formed upon the end thereof.
. Serial No. 612,213. (No model.)
The bow A being composed of spring metal it is obvious that the parts of the device will be maintained in their relative positions by the spring action of the said bow, whether it is set for use as aparcel-carrier, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, or as a hand-grip for street-car straps, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
WVhen it is used as a parcel-carrier, the user will grasp the bow A and the loop I), and parcels may be carried or suspended from the hooks a and b When the device is used as a hand-grip for street-car straps,it is unfolded and set in position, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The hook I) is then passed through the loop of the c ar-strap,whereby the device is suspended therefrom, and an operator can then grasp the bow A and support himself without directly handling the carstrap, thus avoiding the danger of contamination by handling straps that are not in a clean condition.
I do not confine myself to the specific details of mechanical construction as herein described, as it is obvious that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to variations of structural detail. Neither do I confine myself to the materials used, as I may employ celluloid, compressed fiber, or other suitable material in the construction of the bow, as well as the folding hooks. Neither do I confine myself to the specific mode of hinging the two parts together, as illustrated in the drawings, as any other well-known form of connecting the hooks to the bow may be employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a hand-grip and parcel-carrier, the combination of a bow of spring metal having hooks extended from its adjacent ends, and a compound hook clamped between the said ends, substantially as shown and described.
2. As a parcel-carrier and'hand-grip, the combination of a bow composed of spring metal and having grooves inits two adjacent ends and hooks extended from said ends; with a compound hook pivotally secured between the said ends, substantially as shown and de scribed.
3. A hand-grip, comprising a bow or loop. @166 of two witnesses, this 7th day of Novemhaving folding hooks attached theretoafid ber, 1896.
