A. F. CHANDLER.
WELT TRIMMBR'.
PatentedJuly' 27, 1897.
CZMJ@ ,Q/@M MX@ SOM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT F. CHANDLER, OF'SWAMPSCCTT, MASSACHUSETTS.
WELT-TRIM M ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,279, dated July 27, 1897.
Application filed July 15, 1896. Serial No.' 599,334. (No model.)
To all whom` t may con/0.97%:
Beit known that 1, ALBERT F. CHANDLER, of Swampscott, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Telt-Trimmers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speciiication.
My invention relates to an improvement in welt-trimmers; and the objects of my improvement are to provide a means of adjusting the guard when the edge is worn, or as' may be desired, and also to facilitate the trimming of the Welt by turning away the kerf through the means of an annular groove on the cutter. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a side View ofthe same. Fig. 3 isa` rear view, and F1g.4 is a detailed view of thev several parts.
Similar numbers refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
1 is a holder of metal of convenient form to contain the cutter and guard, hereinafter specied, vand provided with the shank 2, adapted to be held, as usual, in a handle 3. The holder 1 has a circular recess 4 and is provided with the threaded bores 5, 6, and 7 and the squared slot 8.
9 is the cutter, of the form shown in Fig. 4, having the cutting edge 10, and fixed in the holder 1, as shown in Fig. 1, by the set-screw 11, the thread of which corresponds with the thread of bore 5 which receives it.
The cutter 9 is provided with an annular groove 12.
13 is the guard, of the form shown in Fig. 4, on the under side of which is the square block 14, provided with the threaded bore 15, eX- tending through the said block 14. The block 14 is integral with the guard and conforms to the size of the square slot 8 in the holder 1. The guard 13 is placed in the'holder 1, the block 14 being arranged in the squared slot S of the said holder.
16-is a set-screw arranged in the bores 15 ofthe block 14 from the outer side of the guard, as shown in Fig.` 2.
17 and 18 are adj usting-screws arranged on either side of the slot 8 in the bores 6 and 7, respectively, on the under side of the holder 1.
and thus the cutting of the welt be regulated,
and by the adjusting- screws 17 and 18 the edge of the guard may be adjusted with the cutting edge 10, said screws pressing against the under side of said guard.
When the welt is being trimmed, the kerf of the welt is caught by the annular groove 9 and turned away, so that the cutting edge 10 can be used to more advantage and the kerf kept from impeding the work.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In welt-trimmers, a holder provided with a circular recess and a shank, a cutter provided with a cutting edge and an annular groove arranged in the said holder by a setscrew as described, a guard having a squared block with a bore therein and having said block arranged in a squared slot of said holder and held and regulated by a set-screw arranged in the bore of said block as described, adjusting-screws arranged to pass' through said holder against the under side of said guard; all substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The cutter 9 provided with a knife-edge 10 and groove 12 substantially as set forth.
3. The guard 13 provided with the block 14 having a bore 15 substantially as described -and shown.
4. The holder l having the circular recess 4 and squared slot 8 and bores 5, 6 and 7; substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 24th day of June, A. D. 1895.
ALBERT F. CHANDLER.
