IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-CULTIVATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,693, dated Octobcr-9, 1866.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, L. O. STEvENs, of Pekin, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Corn-Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan or top view of my invention; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section of the same, taken in the line :r, Fig. 1.

This invention relates to a new and improved cultivator designed for cultivating corn and other crops grown in hills or drills; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the operator or driver has complete control over the implement, and can operate the plows with the greatest facility in the prosecution of their work.

A A represent two parallel beams, which are mounted on wheels B B, and are curved upward at their front ends, and connected at said ends by links or joints to a with a crossbar, 0, to which a V-shaped frame, D, is attached, having a draft-pole, E, secured to it. The rear end of this frame D has a standard, F, attached to it, (one at each side,) said standards extending down at the outer sides of the beams A A, and each having a plow,

Within the frame D there are secured by pivots c 0 two standards, H H, the upper parts of which incline backward and form handles, the latter extending sufficiently far back to be Within convenient reach of the driver on his seat I.

(Z, and to the lower ends of said standards plows J are attached, the latter being somewhat in advance of the plows G G.

On each beam A there is secured a metallic frame, K, the upper parts of which serve as bearings for the ends of a shaft, L 5 and this shaft is further supported near its center by the bearings at the upper ends of curved or arched metal bars M M, attached to the beams A A. (See Fig. 3.)

The shaftLhas two arms, N N, attached to .it, one ncar'each end,and the outer ends of these arms are secured by pivots c to the rear end of frame D. A lever, O, is also attached to one end of the shaft L, said lever extending past a curved and notched bar, P, which admits of the lever bin g retained at any point within the scope of its movement, and the frame I), and consequently the plows G J, secured at a greater or less height, according to the depth of furrow required, and also admit of the plows being raised entirely out of the ground when required. This lever O can readily be manipulated by the driver from his seat I, and the standards H H also moved laterally, so as to guide or move the plows J J to the right or left to conform to the siuuosities of the rows of plants. It will be seen that the plows are under the complete control of the operator.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The frame D, arms N N, and beams A A, combined and operating substantially as described, for the purpose specified.

2. The curved or arched bars M M, in con nection with. the frames K K, for supporting the shaft L, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
