Description
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. G. SIIAVER, CF NEWT HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
ERASER AND BURNISHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 58,684, dated October 9, 1866.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. G. SHAVER, ot" New Haven, in the county ofNew Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Erasers and Burnishers; and I do hereby declare the following to be at'ull, clear, and exact description of the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4 exhibit modiiications of my invention.
My invention consists in the construction ot' erasers,desk-knives, and implements of that character designed and adapted for the erasure of ink from paper or parchment with metallic or mineral burnishers, in a manner substantially as set forth in the following description.
Many forms' of erasers have been made vin order to meet the demands of individual taste, and, notwithstanding the peculiar merits ot' these various forms, very many persons prefer the old-fashioned ordinary style, as that shown in the blade of Fig. 1.
It is very well known that a good burnisher is as necessary to the efficiency of the implement as is a good blade, and it is also well known that a good and elcient burnisher cannot be constructed except from some material possessing great hardness and capable of receiving a very high polish. rIhe most coinmon materials for such purpose are steel and agate, and I construct the burnishers attached to my erasers of those or other suitable materials.
Eraser-blades are frequently set into turned handles, as in Fig. 3, andwith such l use round or oval pointed tips a, made of hardened steel or other suitable material, as shown in Fig. 8. These tips are provided with a tang projecting into the handle, or with a hole, into which the end ot the handle is inserted. Upon the ordinary fiat handles, as in Fig. l, I place a corresponding tip, as shown at b, which may be solid, with a tang or blade extending into the handle, or it may be merely a shell placed over the end and secured in any suitable way. It' the tip is to be applied to a knite with movable blade, as shown in Fig. 2, the tip and back-spri n g may very conveniently be made in 011e piece, as shown at c, though that form is not essential.
To serve as a paper 'folder or cutter, I make the fiat `tip somewhat thinner and longer, as shown at l in Fig. LI. One edge is then preferably made thinner and sharper than the other, as the. sharper edge will eut paper better and the blunt one will fold it better.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the blade or handle ot an eraser or desk-knife, a burnisher-tip, substantially as described.
A. G. SHAVER.
