ARTIFICIAL STRAW.

MARVIN O. STONE, OF \VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
ARTIFICIAL STRAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,057, dated June 22, 1897.
Application filed January 24,1896. $erial No. 576,720. (Specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN O. STONE, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Artificial Straws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference more particularly to a double paper tube of peculiar construction adapted to be employed for imbibing liquid beverages in a manner similar to the natural straw now commonly used for this purpose. The double tube is made of a single strip of paper by bending the same longitudinally in the general form of the letter B that is to say, the two edges of the straw are turned or curled. inward to form two tubes, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The drawing represents a sectional perspective View of my improved double tube.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a single strip or ribbon of paper having its edges bent longitudinally and curled or turned inward toward each other to form two tubes 2 and 3, the edges being extended alongside the central portion of the paper and the article thus produced presenting in cross-sec- 6, representing the tubes.
which the double tube is made may be treated before the bending operation by a suitable waterproofing material, such as liquid paraflin, or the article after it is bent into form may be subjected to the coating. In the latter case the coating will act to bind and hold the edges of the strip in the tubular forms.
It is designed to make the double tube in imitation of the natural straw, and as a result of its double form the capacity of the straw is increased, while its peculiar flat form will adapt it to be held with more comfort between the lips.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- As a new article of manufacture, an artificial double straw made in imitation of a natural straw and consisting of a single strip of paper bent longitudinally, with its edges curled inward and extended along the body portion of the strip and a waterproofing coating applied thereto and serving to secure the edges of the strip in place and preserve its tubular form.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand, this 23d day of January, 1896, in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
MARVIN O. STONE.
