I. COHEN.
CAPE.
No. 583,890. Patented June 8, 1897.
INVENTOR WlTNESSES 5 ATTORNEW UNITED STATES PATENT rricE.
IDA COHEN, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
CAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters li'atent No. 583,890, dated June 8, 1897.
Application filed April 19, 1895. Serial No. 546,339. (No model.)
To all whom it may cancer/t:
Be it known that I, IDA COHEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Capes, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to shoulder-capes such as are usually worn by ladies, and particularly to those which are made of fine fur or other costly material; and the object thereof is to provide a reversible lining therefor which can be turned or folded outside of the cape and form a protection therefor in wet weather, so that the fur or other material of which the cape is composed will not be inj u red by rain or snow.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a View showing in elevation a cape of the usual form made of fur and provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a view of a section of the inside of the cape with the lining partly unbuttoned or loosened preparatory to reversing it; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the cape and its lining, showing the latterin its normal position; and Fig. 4, a similar view showing the lining of the body of the cape and also of the collar, fully reversed, completely covering the body of the cape and its collar.
In the practice of my invention I provide the inner side of the cape A with the usual body-lining B, as shown in Fig. 2, and in the construction shown in'the drawings both the inner and outer surfaces of the collar 0 and D are composed of fur, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The abutting edges of the front sides of the cape are provided with strips E, of any desired material, which are secured to and hold the usual lining Bin position, and this lining B is secured to the cape both at the top and bottom in the usual manner and does not differ from the construction heretofore employed.
Secured to the bottom of the inner side of the collar at F, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, is my improved cover or protector G for the collar of the cape, which is adapted, when desired, to be folded over the collar of the cape, as shown in Fig. 4. This cover or protector for the collar of the cape when not in use is folded within and below the collar of the cape, as shown in Fig. 3, and remains in this position under all ordinary circumstances or when not required to protect the collar.
The false lining or protector K of the body of the cape is of the same general form as said body portion and is composed of waterproof material preferably provided with a silken outer surface, as is also the protector G of the collar, and is secured to the bottom of the cape by sewing or stitching in the usual manner and to the front edges or sides and to the top by means of spring-buttons of the form usually employed in connection with gloves or similar articles, parts of which are connected with the cape, as shown at L, the other portions thereof being connected with the false lining or protector K, as shown at M. It will be observed that a row of these buttons or attachments extends around the base of the collaror the upper portion of the body above the upper edge of the collar-protector G, as shown at N in Figs. 3 and 4, and also in Fig. 2, as shown at L, and a similar row is provided on the inner side of each of the front edges of the cape.
When the protectors for the collar and the body of the cape are folded on the outer sides thereof, as shown in Fig. 4, the upper edge of the body portion of the protector K buttons onto the lower edge of the collar-protector, as shown in said figure, the ball by which this connection is made being attached to the collar-protector and the spring-clamp thereof to the upper edge of the protector L of the body portion of the cape, and when in its normal position or that shown in Figs. 2 and 3 this body portion of the protector K is, as hereinbefore stated, secured at the top by means of similar connecting devices attached thereto, as shown at M and N, Figs. 2 and 3, the ball part of the attachment being secured to the collar, as shown at L.
The operation will be apparent from the foregoing descriptionwhen taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. IV henever it is necessary to protect the outer surface or portion of the cape, the part G is folded ICO over the collar, as shown in Fig. 4, and the partK is unbuttoned at the top and front edges and turned down and around the body portion of the cape and buttoned to the outer lower edge of the collar-protector G, as is also clearly shown in said figure, and the said parts G and K can be returned to their normal position or that shown in Fig. 3 by reversing this operation, as will be readily understood.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A shoulder-cape or similar article, having the usual collar a protector secured at its lower edge to the corresponding edge of the cape, and normally fastened at its upper edge to the inner side of the collar, a collar-protector fastened at one end to the lower portion of the collar, on the inner side thereof and normally folded beneath the cape-protector, said collar and cape protectors being adapted to be folded on the outer side of the collar and cape respectively, and to be fas tened or buttoned together, at their free edges, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a cape having the usual collar and lining, of a protector as G, secured to the lower portion of the collar on the inner side and hanging freely therefrom, 1
to have their meeting edges buttoned or otherwise fastened together, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 18th day of April, 1805.
' IDA COHEN.
