PLAN ER-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,502, dated J une 1, 1897.
Application filed January 23, 1897. Serial No. 620,353. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDI E. MCDUFFIE,a citizen of the United States, residing at Alcolu, in the county of Clarendon and State of Sou th Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planer-Heads 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to rotary planer-heads used on woodworking machinery.
My object is to provide a planer head equipped with improved grooving-tools, novel means foradj usting and holding the same, and scales whereby the proper position of the tools can be accurately and quickly determined.
The grooving tools employed by me are used to groove the lumber, so that splines and grooves can be made for iiooring and other work and the tools orbits can be quickly and easily changed, so that different kinds of work can be done. Owing to the construction of the parts there is no danger of the bits or tools becoming detached, while any desired adjustment can be had.
The invention will be set forth more in detail in the following description and the novel features thereof pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a top perspective view of the planer-head, showing the planing-knives and the tools in position; Fig. 2, an elevation looking toward one of the adj Listing-screws, the clamps, and a grooving tool or bit; Fig. 3, an end elevation; Fig. 4, a vertical section on line at a: of Fig. 3 5 Fig. 5, a View of the wrench employed.
The planer-head is designated by the numeral 1, the same being provided with the usual T-shaped slots 2 on opposite sides.
The numeral 3 designates the opening which receives the spindle. c
At 4 are shown the planing-knives, which are secured to the head by bolts and nuts 5 5, said bolts having their heads lying in the T- shaped slots. This construction is old and well known to the art, and hence I lay no claim to the same.
On opposite sides of the head are additional slots 6 6, extending vertically the length of the head.
My improved mechanism on opposite sides of the head is the same, and henceIwill only describe that found on one side thereof. There is a bearing-box 7 set into the head at the top portion thereof, said box being provided with two inner. shoulders 8 and 9.-
The numeral 10 designates an adjustingscrew which lies in the slot 6 and passes up through the box, said screw being provided with a square upper end l1 and a head 12 on its lower end. Its-lower end portion is also blank, as at 13. v
The numeral 14 designates av nut having a circular base 15, which is received between the two shoulders of the box. There are two clamping members or jaws 16 and 17, the former being internally threaded, so that it will move when the screw is turned, the latter being loosely received on the blank portion of said screw.
The numeral 18 designates the groovin g tool or bit which, it Will be observed, has outer beveled edges 2O and 21, which are received in the overhanging ledges 22 and 23 of the clamping members. There is a scale 24 extending vertically on the side of the head, whereby the grooving-tool can be brought to the proper position.
Fig. 5 shows the form of wrench employed for adjusting the grooving-tool, said wrench comprising a shank 25, having a pocket 26, adapted to receive the squared end of the screw, and a larger pocket 27 at its other end adapted to receive the nut. Said wrench is provided with a handle 28.
It will be observed that by turning the nut the clamping members and the tool can be raised or lowered to any desired degree to bring the tool into proper position on the scale to perform its office and that by turning the screw its upper clamp member can be moved toward or away from the lower member, so that the tool can be released or clamped.
It will be evident to one skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that said invention possesses many advantages, inasmuch as owing to the peculiar form of the clamping members the tools are firmly secured and prevented from iiyin g off, while said tools can be adjusted, as desirable, and replaced by different tools quickly and easily. By changing the tools and the relative posi- IOO tions thereof different kinds of work can be treated and the changes made without necessitating the removal of the planer-head from its spindle.
rIlhere are many slight and immaterial changes which could be resorted to in carrying out the invention without departing from any of the advantages thereof, and hence it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein shown and described, but consider that I am entitled to such Variations as come within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. 'Ihe combination with a planer-head, of a box carried thereby, a rotatable member adapted to turn in said box, a screw threaded through said member, a clamp member through which the screw loosely passes, a
second clamp member through which the screw is threaded, and a tool held by said clamp.
2. The combination with a planer-head, of a box connected thereto which is provided with separated shoulders, a nut having a base which is received between said shoulders, a screw threaded through the nut and provided with a blank portion, and ahead at its lower end, a clamp member loosely received on the blank portion, a second clamp member through which the screw is threaded, and a tool located between said clamp members.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
