UNITED STATES PATENT Grrrcn.
CARL G. ANDERSON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED SOFA AND BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,136, dated May 25, 1897.
Application filed June 3,1896. Serial No. 594,139. (No model.)
have invented a certain new and useful Im-' provement in a Combined Sofa and Bed; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a combined sofa and bed so constructed that the sofa may be readily transformed into a bed and still present the appearance of a sofa when not in use as a bed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sofa, showing one of the arms thrown down preparatory to transforming the sofa into a bed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the seat reversed and one of the extension-pieces drawn out. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through a portion of the frame, showing the end plates with the friction-rolls in the position occupied when in use as a bed, the seat-section being shown in dotted Fig. 4 is a similar View showing the frictionrolls in the position occupied when in use as a sofa, the seat being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a detailed view of the sofa, showing the means employed to lock the armsections in position when in use as a sofa. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line so a of Fig. 3, showing the seat-section reversed for use as a bed and also showing the locking mechanism attached to the extensionsections for locking the seat-section in position when in use as a bed.
Referring to the drawings, A is the frame; B, the back.
A are arms hinged at a.
O is the seat-section. Engaged to the ends I of the seat-section are friction-rollers D D.
rise in the vertical way and serve as a pivot, while the others traverse the circular way. Secured to the seat-section is a suitable stop 0, which, in connection with looking mechanism to be hereinafter described, serves to hold the seat-section rigidly when the same is reversed for use as a bed.
F are head and foot sections arranged to slide, so as to give the proper length to the bed when in use for that purpose. Secured to the edges of these sliding extensions are suitable metal plates having formed thereon a portion serving as a bolt f, which when the sliding sections are drawn to their fullest eX- tent will enter suitable openings f in the frame A, thereby rigidly locking the seat-section in its reversed position. The stop 0, before referred to, resting in a suitable depression 0 in the frame, assists in supporting the seat-sections when in use as a bed, and when the seat-section is reversed in position as a sofa the stop 0 comes in cont-act with the abutment 0 thereby assisting in supporting the seat portion when in use as a sofa. It will also be notedthat the seat-section when used as a sofa is caused to come in contact with the back B of the sofa, which also assists in supporting the seat.
G is the mattress, made in sections, so that it may be readily folded and adapt itself to the varying conditions underwhich the combined sofa and bed may be used.
H is a cover secured to the seat-section of the sofaor other suitable point, which when drawn over the back is held in position by pins engaging the eyeletsin the cover. When the mattress is folded and the sliding extension-pieces are forced toward each other, so that the seat-section canbe reversed, the cover is drawn over the mattress, bedclothing, 850., and buttoned onto suitable pins hon the seat-section. The cover thus holds the mattress, bedclothing, &c., and prevents any chance of displacement.
Referring to Fig. 5 of the drawings, on the back of the arm A is secured a plate a, notched to receive a spring a one end of which is secured to the back of the sofa. It will be readily understood that when the arm-section is thrown into the position occupied when in use as a sofa that this spring will ride into the notch provided in the plate a and thereby lock the arms in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a combined sofa and bed, the combination of a sofa-frame, a reversible seat-section, circular and vertical ways mounted on the ends of the sofa-frame and friction-rolls mounted on the ends of the seat-section adapted to travel in the ways referred to, said vertical way radiating from an are formed by the circular way whereby in reversing the said section one set of the friction-rolls will be permitted to rise in said vertical way and serve as a pivot while the others traverse the circular way, substantially as described.
2. In a combined sofa and bed, the combi- CARL G. ANDERSON.

SAMUEL E. THOMAS, MIRA ANDERSON.
