TOOL-REST FOR GRINDSTONES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,674, dated May 18, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN NYDEGGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Rests for Grindstones; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to tool-rests for grindstones.

My object is to provide a simple and cheap as well as strong tool-rest of the class described which will be perfectly adapted to hold the tool at the proper inclination, so that it may be correctly ground.

A further object is to provide an improved and novel tool-rest of the class described which will be adapted for adjustment, so that it can be arranged to give a tool any desired inclination, whereby proper grinding may be had.

Having these objects in view, my invention consists of a tool-rest of the class described comprising upper and lower pieces hinged together, together with improved means for adjusting the upper piece so that the tool will be held at the proper inclination.

It further consists of certain other improved and novel features and combinations appearing more fully hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a grindstone equipped with my improved tool-rest and showing a tool in position; Fig. 2, a detail view and side elevation of the tool-rest; Fig. 3, a front detail view thereof, and Fig. at a detail plan view.

R designates the frame, S an ordinary grindstone, and T a chisel, which is shown in position for grinding.

A plank or piece of timber b extends across and is connected to one end of the frame B, so that its front edge will lie closely adjacent to the periphery of the grindstone.

The letter a designates an adj Listing-block which may be constructed of any preferred material. This adjustment-block is connected to plank b by hinges c 0, so that it can be moved vertically, the hinges being located at the front edge of the plank and adjustmentblock. The top of the adj ustment-block is fiat, but the front edge of said block is beveled or inclined, as at f, and against this inclined surface the tool is held while being ground.

The letter 6 represents an ear which is sunk in the lower face of the adjusting-block, near the rear end thereof, and is connected to the same by screws g. This ear projects outwardly some distance, and an adjusting-screw d passes therethrough, said screw being provided with a suitable head, so that it can be grasped by the fingers. The top of the screw abuts on plank b, and by turning said screw the adjustment-block may be raised or lowcred, so that as it swings on its hinge connection the angle that the inclined face f makes with the horizontal diameter of the grindstone is varied. After suitable adjustment of the block has been effected the tool is placed against the inclined surface f and it can then be correctly ground.

It is obvious that slight and immaterial changes of construction may be resorted to by one skilled in the art to which my invention appertains without detracting from its advantages, and hence it is to be understood that I consider myself entitled to all such variations as come within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with the frame of a grindstone, of an adj ustment-block having a flat upper face and a beveled or inclined face leading from the flat face and being locatedimmediately adjacent to the grindstone, hinges connecting the adj ustment-block to the grindstone-frame, and a screw for adjusting said block.

2. The combination with the frame of a grindstone, of an adj ustment-block having a beveled or inclined edge or face which is located immediately adjacent to the grindstone, hinges connecting the adj ustment-block with the frame of the grindstone, an ear connected to the adj ustment-blook, and an adjustingscrew passing through said ear and abutting on the frame.
