SAFETY-POCKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,655, dated April 27, 1897.

Be it known that I EDWARD H. BURGER, of

Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in pockets, and particularly in safety-pockets by which to secure a pencil or like object from accidentally falling from the pocket; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a part of a vest provided with my improvements, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on about line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on about line 3 3, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4c is a detail view.

The pocket A, which may be that of a vest, as shown, or of other similar garment, has the front wall B and the rear or back wall 0, the latter supporting the safety device near the mouth of the pocket and preferably just below the same, so the device will be entirely out of view.

The safety device comprises the holder, having a frame-plate D, having its ends curved or arched at cl and provided at its extremities with the barbs or tongues d,which extend through the rear wall of the pocket, thence through the back plate E, and are secured by bending or clenching in rear of said back plate. This back plate E is arranged within the garment and against the inner side of the rear wall of the pocket.

In the frame-plate D of the holder I secure the binding-piece F, which is preferably of soft rubber and formed with the plate f, cemented or otherwise secured to the plate D, and the flexible teeth f, projecting and cooperating with the rear wall of the pocket. This binding'piece, it will be seen, presses against the pencils or other articles and holds the same against the rear wall of the pocket; but if the latter be loose or unsupported the articles will not be held securely, especially when the wearer leans forward and releases the tension across the chest of the vest or when the garment is off. Now to secure a positive hold on the pencils or the like I pro vide the back plate E, which serves the purpose of keeping the back wall of the vest taut, holding such wall snugly up to the binding-piece and also as a fastening in securing the holder firmly in the pocket.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the back plate is an important element and is useful in securing the holder in place as well as in pressing the back wall of the garment in position to cooperate with the bindingpiece in holding the articles.

In practice the device will securely hold in place any articles, such as pencils, pen-holders, tooth-brush, pocket-comb, &c., no matter in what position the wearer may be, and they cannot fall out when the garment is removed. The construction is such that when a pencil is partly used it can be held in convenient reach instead of being in the bottom of a deep pocket.

The device is simple, cheap, can be easily applied, and will be out of sight and convenient in use.

It will be noticed that the holding device is made of a length less than the width of the pocket, so that it is arranged between and separated from the side edge or edges of the pocket, so the front wall of said pocket will be unstrained, and the portion of the mouth of said pocket in advance of such safety device will be just as if no safety device were used.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A pocket provided with a safety device consisting of the holder composed of a frame having at its ends rearwardly-curved portions and provided at its extremities with barbs or tongues projecting through the rear wall of the pocket, the binding-piece fitting in said frame and having elastic teeth extending toward and cooperating with the rear wall of the pocket and the back plate arranged on the inner side of the rear wall of the pocket and engaged by the prongs, or tongues of the holder-frame all substantially as shown and described.

2. In a pocket substantially as described a safety device comprising a frame-plate curved at its ends and provided at its extremities with fastening means and a binding-piece consisting of a plate of rubber secured to the inner face of the frame-plate and having inWardly-projectin g elastic teeth substantially as shown and described.

3. A pocket having outer and rear Walls and having the safety device composed of the holder having a frame-plate having at its extremities barbs or tongues projecting through the rear Wall at points between and separate from the side'edge or edges of the pocket whereby the front Wall of such pocket will be unstrained, the-binding-piece secured to the rear face of said holder-frame and having elastic teeth cooperating With the back wall of said pocket and the back plate fitted against the rear Wall of said pocket and engaged by the barbs or tongues of the holderplate all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
