JOHN JAMES BARTON, OF YPSILANTI, ll/IIOHIGAN.
ELECTRICAL ALARM DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,528, dated April 27, 1897.
Application filed December 12, 1896. Serial No. 615,428. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN J AMES BARTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Alarm Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to electrical alarm.
devices,"and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted for use in hotels, large apartment houses, and similar places.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved electrical alarm device; Fig. 2, a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 side view of a detail of the construction.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are indicated by the same numerals of reference, and in the practice of my invention I provide a plate or board 5, which is adapted to be secured to a wall or any suitable support and on which is secured a metal plate 6, in which are mounted two similar single-coil magnets 7 and 8. I
The metal plate 6 is provided at one side with an outwardly-directed fiange or projection 9 and at the opposite side and at the lower end thereof with a shoulder or projection 10, and at the end opposite the shoulder or projection 10 and on the same side with an extension 11, and connected with said plate by means of an arm 12, is a gong or bell 13. I also provide a closed circuitwhich comprises a battery 14 and two wires 15 and 16, which extend therefrom and are connected with the single-coil magnet 7 in the usual manner, and secured to the end of the plate or board 5, opposite the bell or gong 13, are two metal plates 17 and 18, which constitute cut-out strips and which are provided with binding- posts 19 and 20, with which the wires 15 and 16, respectively, are connected, and the adjacent ends of the plates 17 and 18 are separated, and formed between said ends is a hole. 21, and I also providea plug 22, which carries an armature 26, which is adapted to A be operated upon by either of the magnets 7 and 8, and said armature is provided with an arm 27, at the end of which isa knob or knocker 28, which is designed to operate in connection with the bell or gong 13, and connected with the extension 11. of the plate 6 is a binding-post 29, through which passes a setscrew 30, which constitutes a contact-point for the spring-arm 25. I also provide a normally open circuit, which comprises a singlecell battery 31, suitable for open-circuit work, from which extend two wires or conductors 32 and 33.
The wire or conductor 32 connects with a binding-post 34 and with the end of the springarm 25, and the wire or conductor 33 connects witha binding-post 35 and with the magnet 8 and extends from said magnet to the binding-post 29.
The plug 22 is intended as a means for testing the apparatus, and it will be understood that when this plug is not inserted in the hole 21 the circuit in which the magnet 7 is placed is closed, and whenever it is desired to test the apparatus the plug 22 is inserted into the hole 21 and the circuit in which the magnet 7 is placed is broken and the alarm is at once operated by means of the normally open circuit, in which the magnet S is placed.
The battery 14 is the main battery of the apparatus, and the battery 31 consists of a single-cell battery suitable for open-circuit work, or any suitable sources of electrical supply may be employed.
My improved alarm device is intended as a fire-alarm to be used in all of the rooms or apartments of a hotel or other building, and by means thereof the occupant of a room or apartment may at any time test the apparatus by inserting the plug 22, and it will be understoodthat the alarms in all of the rooms may be operated from the central office in the usual manner, and my improved electricalarmapparatus is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is in tended; and,
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In an alarm, the combination of two magnets, a single armature for the magnets, a bell, a knocker for the be1l carried by the armature, a normally open circuit, including a battery and one of the magnets, the armature and a contact-point to be engaged by
