Description
(No ModeL) W. E. KEELER. KNOGKDOWN BOX.
No. 5815234. PatellltedApr. 20, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT ERICE.
I/VALTER E. KEELER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HERBERT L. IIILDRETH, OF SAME PLACE.
KNOCKDOWN BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,234, dated April-20, 189'?.
Application led April 11, 189.6.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WALTER E. KEELER, a
Acitizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inockdown Boxes, of Which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to knockdown boxes Ymade of pasteboard or similar material 3 and its object is to provide a box which will be very stiff when set up without adding to the thickness of the material of which it is made. I accomplish this result by means of overlapping flaps constructed and arranged substantially as hereinafter described and as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my box open as it appears when set up. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank 'which forms the top, bottom, and one side thereof.A Fig. 3 is a plan View of a blank which forms the remaining parts of the box.
The blank A is scored, as at 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, thereby forming the top a of the box, its rear side b, its bottom c, the reinforcing-flap CZ, the locking-flap e, and the supplementary flap f, the purpose of which will presently be described. The blank B is scored at 7, 8, 9, 10, ll, 12, 13, and 14, thereby forming attaching end iiaps g g, the ends of the box Zt, and the front i thereof, and also supplementary iiaps Zo 7c Z Z.
The box is put together by securing the flaps g to the rear wall b of the box, and the box is then set up by bending the flaps Zo at right angles to the ends h, bringing the bottom c up into place beneath said aps k k, and slipping the parts CZ and f up inside of the frontZof the box and between it and the edges of the aps k 7c. There Will then be around the topedge of the box when opened the iiaps Z, Z, and f, of which the flaps Z Z are rst bent inward to a horizontal position, and the lapf is then bent down upon them, when the box Serial No. 587,088. (No model.)
is ready to be filled and closed in an obvious manner by slipping the flap e between the parts 'L' and d.
By means of the construction just described the flaps ZZare held in place by the flap f, which is supported thereby, and the strengtheningstr p cZ is thus kept from falling inward away from the front side of the box t', while the iaps Zo 7c materially increase the strength and stiffness of the bottom of the box.
My improved box, as above described, is found to be very stiff and durable, even when made of light material. I consider a box made as above described, but without the flaps Za Za, to be within the scope of my invention.V
I claiml. A knockdown box composed of blanks A and B, the blank A being scored to form the top a of the box, its rear side b, its bottom c, a reinforcing-flap CZ, a locking-flap e and a supplementary flap f, and the blank B being scored to form the ends h of the box, its front Z, attaching end flaps g, g, and supplementary iiaps Z, Z, said blanks A and B being connected together, substantially as above described.
2. A knockdown box composed of blanks A and B, the blank A being scored to form the top a of the box, its rear side b, its bottom c, a reinforcing-Hap CZ, a locking-flap e, and a supplementary flap f, and the blank B being scored to form the ends h of the box, its front Z, attaching end flaps g, g, and supplementary flaps la, k, Z, Z,- said blanks A and B being connected together, substantially as above described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 9th day ofMarch, A. D. 1896.
WALTER E. KEELER.
