UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY GARTELMAN, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
PRESERVE-JAR G RAPPLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,268, dated April 6, 189'?.
Application filed November 16, 1896. Serial No. 612,263. (No model.)
To LZZ whom it 1v1/ty concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY GARTELMAN, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved PreserVe-Jar Grapple, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved preserve-jar grapple which is simple and durable in construction, and more especially designed for enabling a person to conveniently and readily handle jars while filling the same with preserves and the like, heating the jar and its contents, and fastening the cover in place without danger of soiling or scalding his or her hands.
- The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation of the improvement in an open position. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same as applied. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. e is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 4 e of Fig. 3.
The improved device for holding and lifting jars is provided with two arms A A', pivotally connected with each other by a pivot B, as plainly indicated in the drawings, so that the arms can open and close upon manipulating the handles A2 and A3, formed on the ends of said arms. Bands C and C', of steel or other flexible material, are secured on the said arms on opposite sides of the pivot B, as plainly indicated in the drawings, the said bands being adapted to engage the peripheral surface of the jar D, to be taken hold of and manipulated by the device. When the handles A2 and A3 are open, as indicated in Fig. l, then the device can be readily passed over the jar D to bring the bands near the bottom and top of the body of the jar, and the operator on closing the handles A2 A2, by pressing the same toward each other, causes the bands C C to be drawn in firm peripheral contact with the jar as the arms A A' close. (See Figs. 2 and 3.)
On the lower end of one of the arms A or A' is formed an inwardly-projecting foot A47 adapted to engage the under side or bottom of the jar D at the time the arms A A move into a closing position. The foot Al serves as a safeguard for preventing the jar D from accidentally dropping out of the bands in case the operator should release the handles A2 A3 and permit the bands to open.
One end of each band C or O is preferably riveted or otherwise fastened to one of the arms, and the other end of the band is preferably fastened to the other arm by means of a thumb-screw E, adapted to engage one of a series of apertures C2 in the free end of the band, so that the operator is enabled to increase or diminish the diameter of the band for jars of various sizes.
The device permits of readily engaging and holding a jar, so as to fill the same with preserves, and place the jar in a hot-water or steam bath in order to treat the contents of the jar in the usual manner. It further serves to readily remove the jar, when in a hot condition, from the said bath, and allows the operator to screw or otherwise fasten the cover upon the mouth of the jar without requiring a separate holding of the jar by means of a towel or the like, as heretofore practiced.
By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the arms A A are on one side of the body of the jar D, to permit of conveniently screwing on the cover, as above mentioned, without the arms interfering with the cover. The handles A2 and A3 are a sufcient distance above the mouth of the jar so as not to interfere with placing the cover in position.
By drawing the flexible bands in peripheral contact with the body of the jar D it is evident that the operator is enabled to firmly screw the cover on without turning the jarbody in the bands C or C.
As shown in the drawings, the handles A2 and A3 are preferably made half-round in cross-section and ,placed on opposite sides of the extension of the arms, so that when the handles are closed they form a round handle made in sections.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A device of the class described, com- IOO Io prising handled arms pivotally connected with each other, iiexible bands arranged on Opposite sides of the pi'vot'for the said arms,
eac-h band having` one end connected with one of the arms and its other end removably and adjustably connected With the other arm, x5 substantially as shown and described.
