lhviTnn STATES PATENT WILLIAM M. BREVARD, or Macon, GEORGIA.
SAFETY ENVELO P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,467, dated March 23, 1897. Application filed December 21,1896. SerialNo. 616,414. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. BREVARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelops; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety-envelops; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide an envelop with double-sealing flies, and perforations in certain of its parts, to assist in the detection of the effects of tampering or unsealing, which object is attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a back view of an envelop made in accordance with my invention as it ap pears when sealed. Figs. 2 and 3 are plan views of the blanks of which the envelop is made, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged exaggerated crosssection of Fig. 1.
The inner face of the main or larger blank of the envelop is clearly represented in Fig. 1, in which the numeral 1 represents the body portion, which has side flies 2 and 3 and end flaps 4t and 5 formed integral therewith. The inner faces of said side flies 2 and 3 are provided with gummed edges, as shown by heavy lines at 2 and 3. The edges of the outer faces of the end flaps 4t and 5 are provided with gummed strips, as shown by heavy and dotted lines at 6.
Fig. 3 represents the complementary pon tion, which, with the member shown in Fig. 2, is suflficient to form a complete envelop when associated as hereinafter described.
In Fig. 3, '7 designates the body portion which has a fly 8 formed integral therewith,
said fly being provided with gummed edges, as shown at 8.
9 9 represent parallel horizontal slots or cuts which are formed through the body portion 7, and 10 10 designate similar vertical slots.
11 represents perforations formed in rows parallel with the slots D and 10 and across the edge of fly 2 of Fig. 2.
In assembling the parts of the envelop the portion '7 is placed. with the gummed edge uppermost upon the portion 1, which is virtually laying Fig. 3 upon Fig. 2, when the end flaps 4 and 5 are passed through the slots 10 10 and said flaps glued thereto. The lower fly 3 is then moistened, passed through slot 9, and glued against the back face of body 7, when the envelop will be completed.
After a letter or the matter which it is desired to inclose has been placed within the envelop the gummed edge 8 of fly 8 is moistened, folded inward over the letter, and glued to the front face of body 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 4:. After this inner fly has been sealed the gummed edge 2 of fly 2 is moistened and the end thereof passed through slot 9 of body 7 and scaled down, as shown in Fig. 1.
By forming the perforations, as 11, through the members shown it will be impossible to unseal the envelop without tearing thereinto, and thus establishing evidence of its having been tampered with, and the envelop, as a whole, being one that may be securely and doubly sealed and capable of revealing the effects of the slightest tampering to effect an improper opening.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a safety-envelop, the combination of the body, having end flaps and side flies formed integral therewith, said flaps and flies having gummed edges, the complementary portion or body having a gummed fly and slots therein, and the parts adapted to be assembled, substantially as shown, for the pur- 11 in fly 2, and the parts adapted to be asso- 1o pose set forth. oiated and secured, substantially as set forth. 2. In a safety-envelop, the combination of In testimony whereof I affix my signature thelbody 1, having flies 2 and 3 formed intein presence of two Witnesses.
5 gra therewith said flies having 'urnined V edges, the body iaortion 7 having a fly formed VILLIAM BREVARD' integral therewith, said fly 8 having a Witnesses: gummed edge 8, the slots 9 and 10, the per- I. L. SMITH, forations 11 therein, the row of perforations CHRIS. O. BALKooM.
