IMPROVED CARPET-FASTENER.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,895, dated September-V11, 1866.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, OHRIsToPHER GULL- MANN, of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Carpets, 85e.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a plan or top view ot' this invent-ion. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar section ot' a modineat-ion of the same.

This invention consists in the arrangement ot' iiat or concave rods, which are provided with teeth bent down from one or both edges, in combination with screws or other suitable means for fastening the same to the floor, in such a manner that by said rods a carpet or other textile or flexible i'abric can be readilyr stretched and held in position, and by removing the rods the carpet or other article can be taken up without injury.

A represents a rod rolled or otherwise produced out of sheet metal or any other .suitable material. rI his rod is either Hat or concave, and it is provided on one or both edges with teeth a, which are bent down, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 ofthe drawings. These teeth serve to retain the carpet oroth er article to be stretched, and the rods themselves are fastened down to their places by swiv l-screws I), gyhich maybe inserted in the wall.as shown in Fig. 2,')or by screws c, which pass down through slots in the rods, as shown in Fig. 3, or by any other suitable means.

By turning the swivel-screws b or screws cthe rods can be readily removed, and the earpet or other article can be taken up and released without much difficulty or loss of time.

The screws b have curved necks, which correspond with the upper side of the curved rod A, and when the screw is introduced suflciently into the ioor the neck will bear on the rod, and hold the carpet tight against the door.

The teeth of the rods A penetrate the carpet or other article, and retain the same firmly in position without producing much injury to the texture, and a simple, cheap, and durable fastening for carpets is obtained, which is also applicable with advantage for the purpose ot' stretching canvas or for other similar purposes.

Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt- Holding the toothed rod A against the carpet and iioor by means of the screw b, having a curved neck, b, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
