p Be it known that I, SANFORD GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brighton, in the county of- Vashington and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Cabinets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to match-boxes, more especiallyto that class thereof known as single delivery, and the object of the same is to effect certain improvements in the construction of devices of this character.

To this end the invention consists in a cabinet containing a hopper and having a delivery-opening leading therefrom, a match-carrying slide moving through the hopper and adapted to pass one match at a time out said opening, means for raising and lowering the slideand a bell connected with said means whereby the operation of the slide will sound an alarm; and the invention consists, further, in the details of construction whereby this general idea is carried out, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as illustrated in the drawings.

,Figure l represents a perspective View of the cabinet. Fig. 2 is an interior view of the cabinet, showing slides and mechanism. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a section `of the cabinet, showing the edge of the slide.

A represents the walls of the cabinet proper or receptacle, and B and O the top and bottom, respectively. The top isprovided with a slide or cover D. It is also provided near one side with the slots F and F', as shown.

A pair of slides G and G are located in the interior of the cabinet against the front side thereof, and a partition J separates the slides. Suiicient play is left between the side walls of the cabinet and the said partition .I to permit the slide to rise and lower smoothly. To the lower end of each of the slides is secured a strip 0;, having a horizontalslot b cut therein. To the partition J is pivoted an arm I. Said arm is pivoted at its middle to the said partition .I and either end carries a pin c, which engage the slots b` of the slides. The pivot H of the said arm continues through the front of the cabinet and terminates in a knob or handle H on the outside. It will now be seen that by turning the said knob in either direction the slides are raised and lowered alternately. The slides are of such length as to reach above the top of the cabinet through the slots F and F', as shown.

Immediatelybelow the top B is a hopper E, formed by the sloping bottom E. This bottom slants forward or toward the slides G and G. The hopper thus formed is provided with a central partition E2, which forms two compartments suflciently long to permit matches to lie easily within each of them. Now when the knob is turned it carries one of the slides downward slightly below the upper surface of the bottom E', permitting the matches to roll or fall upon the notched or grooved end of the slide. Then when the direction of movement of the knob is reversed the slide carries one match upward through the slot in the top of the case and at the same time the opposite slide is lowered and receives a match to be raised within reach.

Any form of alarm-bell striking mechanism may be used. I have, however, shown one form to complete the device and which consists simply of an Vescapement-wheel affixed to the end of the pivot II and which turns with every movement of the arm I. A hammer or ,clapper K is pivoted at K to the partition and carries at the end opposite to its weighted striking end an anchor-shaped pawl K',which engages the said escapement-wheel.

Thus every movement of the arm I causes the ringing of the bell.`

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a matchcabinet,the combination with a hopper having an inclined bottom and provided with a delivery-opening, a slide moving through the hopper past the lower edge of its bottom and having its upper end shapedto carry a match to said opening, a shaft journaled longitudinally through said cabinet and having a knob outside the same, and an arm fast on the shaft with its end loosely connected with said slide; of a ratchet fast on the shaft,

an escapement engaged by the ratchet,- a clapper moved by the escapement, and a bell which the clapper strikes at each movement of the shaft,'as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a match-oabinet,the combination with a receptacle containing a hopper having an inclined bottom, said receptacle having a delivery-opening near its top, a slide moving through the hopper and its upper end adapted to deliver a match out said opening, and manually-operated devices for raising and lowering said slide; of a bell within the cabinet, a ratchet mounted on said operating devices, an escapement engagingthe ratchet, and a clapper carried by the escapement adjacent the bell whereby the latter is rung at each upward movement of the slide, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In amatch-cabinet,the combination with the receptacle having a transverse partition and containing hoppers on opposite sides thereof, the receptacle having delivery-openings above :the hoppers, slides on opposite sides of the partition moving through said hoppers and having their upper ends shaped to carry one match to each delivery-opening, a shaft journaled longitudinally through said partitionv and having a knob outside the reoeptacle, and an arm fast on the shaft with its ends loosely connected with said slides; of a ratchet fast on the shaft, an escapement engaged by the ratchet, a clapper moved by the escapement, and a bell which the clapper strikes at each movement of the shaft, as and for the purposes setforth. l Y
