SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 578,223, dated March 2, 1897.

Application filed May 14, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LARS E. ELVING, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Otho, in the county1 of Webster and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycombs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, lsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to currycombs, and more particularly to an improved cleaner for the currycomb-teeth.

My object is the provision of improved and efficient mechanism for automatically cleaning the teeth of the curryconib Whenever the operators grasp on the comb-handle is released.

A further object is to' provide means for housing and protecting the teeth when the comb is not in use.

Having these objects in View, the invention consists of certain improved features and combinations, as will appear more fully hereinafter.

My improved currycomb is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional end elevation showing the combs housed; Fig. 2, a like view,

but with the combs projected and ready for use and Fig. 3, a sectional side elevation.

v A represents the currycomb-back, and 1 the combs, which are provided with notched arms 2, passing through corresponding slots 3 in the back and held in place by fastening devices 4. The edges of the back are curved over at 5. The numeral 6 represents a metal covering which is suitably fastened to the back and is formed into a hollow handlestandard 7, from which projects the arched upper section 8 of the handle, which section is provided with a downwardly-extending flange 9. The metal back 10, to which the elongated spring cleaning-lingers or scrapers are connected, has its sides turned downwardly and inwardly, thereby providing cleaning-fingers l1, which scrape the outermost faces of the outer combs. This back is provided with sets of diverging elongated spring cleaning-ngers or Scrapers 12, which are located between adjacent combs and are secured in position by suitable fastening de- Serial No. 591,555. vices 13. The Scrapers bear on the faces of the combs and form downwardly-projecting triangularhousings, which protect the combs when they are not in use, as will appear more fully later on.

The back l0 is connected to angular metal plates having respective bases 14 and 15 and upwardly-projecting flanges 16 and 17, which are adapted to slide in the handle-standard and are connected together by screws or rivets. The flange 16 is extended and forms a guide 18, while the remaining ange 17 is bent outward, passing through an opening in the side of the standard, being formed into the detached lower section 19 of the handle. The lower handle-section has an upwardlyprojecting bar 20, which slides in a guide 21, formed by bending up an edge of the upper handle-section.

|Iwo crossed levers 22 and 23 are pivoted together at their central points and to the flange 9 of the upper handle-section. The ends of these levers carry feet 24, which bear upon the inside of the handle-sections and are provided with studs 25. Open coil-springs 26 and 27 have their ends bearing against these feet and encircling the studs, as shown. These springs normally keep the sections of the handle separated, so that the combs are drawn up into the housings formed by the spring-Scrapers.

When the operator grasps the handle-sections, they are drawn together, exposing the combs for use. When the grasp is released, the springs draw the combs into their housings. In both instances the spring-Scrapers cleanse the faces of the combs of all foreign matter.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is*k 1. In a currycomb, the combination with a main back of a handle-section connected thereto, teeth also connected to the main back, a supplemental back, Scrapers connected to the supplemental back which are also adapted to house the teeth, a handle-section connected to .the supplemental back, levers pivoted together and having their ends bearing against the respective handle-sections, and springs for keeping said handle-sections normally separated.
