Be it known that I, REUBEN G. FAY, of Harlan, in the county of Shelby and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Dcvice for Watering Stock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a connection between a tank and a water-trough or its equivalent, the said connection being so constructed that when. the water in the trough reaches a predetermined level the water from the tank will be automatically supplied to the trough to raise the level of the water therein; and another object of the invention is to provide a feed-water attachment for troughs which will be exceedingly simple, durable, and economic, and which may be ex- I peditiously and conveniently applied to any form of trough or to any form of tank or other reservoir for the water, no matter at what distance the tank may be from the trough.-
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section through a tank and a trough, illustrating the application of the invention thereto; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the valve-section of the attachment.
In carrying out the invention the tank A or other form of reservoir adapted to contain water is constructed in any approved manner at a predetermined elevation above the watertrough B, and the said tank may be at any desired distance from the said trough. A supplypipe 10 is secured, preferably, in a side of the trough near the bottom, and the said supplypipe is carried to Within a predetermined distance of and over the trough B. At the lower end of the supply-pipe a valve 0 is secured, through which the water finds an outlet into the trough. The valve consists of a casing 15, divided by a partition 14 into an upper compartment 15 and a lower compartment 16, the supply-pipe being connected with the upper compartment or chamber 15, while the lower compartment or chamber is that through which the water escapes.
An opening 17, preferably of conical form, is made in the partition 14:, being adapted as a seat for a conical gravity-valve 18, the said valve having guided movement in an opening 19, formed in a cross-bar 20, located within the lower compartment or chamber 16. A stem 21 is attached to the said valve, and the said stem passes through the aforesaid opening 19 and out a predetermined distance below the lower end of the casing. One or more lugs 22 are projected from the side of the casing at or near the bottom, and a hanger 23 is secured to the said lugs, the said hangers serving as bearings for the pivot-pin of a peripherally-grooved pulley 24, and an arm 25 is projected from the hanger in front of the pulley, the said arm being beneath the lower opening in the valve, and in front of the pulley the arm 25 has an opening through which the valve-stem passes. A chain 26 is secured to the lower end of the valve-stem and is passed upward around the pulley 24 and thence down into the trough, where the chain is provided with an attached float 27.
When the water is sufficiently high to buoy the float, the column of water in the tank will hold the valve 18 seated; but in the event that the water in the trough reaches a predetermined low point the weight of the fioat will serve to draw the valve upward from itsseat, permitting the water from the tank to flow into the trough until the float is again carried upward to a predetermined level.
The device is exceedingly simple. It is automatic in its action and may notonly be used for supplying water to troughs, but may be applied to analogous purposes. The floatmay be protected, when used in connection with a trough for watering stock, by passing the end of the trough at which the float is located through an opening in the fence serving to inclose the stock-yard, for example.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1.
