IGNITING DEVICEi N0. 578,004. Patented Mar. 2,1897.
j/v VENTO/f UNITED STATES .PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED CZARNIKOIV, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
IGNITING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 578,004, dated March 2, 1897'.
Application filed February 26, 1896. Serial No. 580,912. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern'.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED GZARNrKow, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and a resident of the city of Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Igniting Gas, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in electric gas-lighters.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved electric gas-lighter which is manipulated some distance from the burner and which lighter has two electrical circuits, one for igniting and one for extinguishing.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views, Figure l is a side view of my ,improved electric gas-lighter. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is a diagram of the circuits.
The electromagnet El is located in the electric circuit A, having a switch A, and the electromagnet e is arranged in the electric circuit a, having a switch d. The magnet E is fastened to the under side of the plate b, forming the top of the casing, and the magnet eis fastened to the side of a standard d on the upper surface of the bottom plate c of the casing, and to the upper end of said standard d the armature f for the magnet E is pivoted at d. The armature f is made U -shaped to permit the gas-supply pipe g to pass, and on its under side said armature has a beveled lug h near its swinging end, which lug can engage the free end of the armature t' for the electromagnet e, said armature being pivoted to the plate c at t. An adj usting-screw 7c is screwed into the armature t', and its inner endbears, through the elastic packingsleeve Z, surrounding the pipe g, upon the valve m, provided With the packing-disk n, and can press said valve on its seat, whereby the passage of the gas from the channel o, through the valve-chamberp, into the channel q is interrupted.
If the circuit A is closed by means of the switch A with the parts in the above-described positions, the armature f is attracted by its magnet E and the lug h releases the armature i, permitting the spring r to press outward and open the valve m and the gas to pass to the burner. At the same time the armature f lifts a rod s, which is normally held in lowered position by the spring s', which rod s, as well as a second, t, are located in the circuit A. A pin u on the rod s normally rests upon a pin n of the rod t. \Vhen the rod s is moved upward, the pins u and o 6o are separated from each other, so that a spark is produced, which ignites the gas escaping from the ignitiug-tube w. The flame from this igniting-iube then ignites the gas issuing from the burner proper.
If the gas is not ignited by the iirst spark, the armature fdrops, on account of the breaking` of the circuit, and the spring s brings the rod S back into the normal position, and as the pins u and o come in contact the circuit 7o is closed again, the armature f is again attracted, the rod s raised, and a spark is produced by the pins u o. This is repeated until the gas issuing from the burner proper is ignited by the sparks produced in rapid succession, whereupon the switch A is opened and the circuit A broken. The several parts then have the positions shown in Fig. 3, and during all these operations the armature t is not attracted by the electromagnet e. 8o
For the purpose of extinguishing the flame, the circuit a is closed by means of the switch a' and the electromagnet e attracts its armature t'. The same, by means of its beveled end, snaps beyond the lug h of the armature f and is held by this lug until the circuit A is closed again. When the armature t' is attracted, the screw 7tpresses the valve in upon its seat and the gas is cut off.
As shown in Fig. 3, the above-described 9o mechanism is surrounded by a protective casing .2, having an opening e', through which the screw 7c can be adjusted. The pin fr on the plate l) serves to prevent, by means of the rod 0c on the rod s, the latter from turning. The 95 sleeve y guides the rod s in its longitudinal movements.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isn
In an electric gas-lighter, the combination with the gas supply pipe g, of the elastic sleeve Z surrounding it, the valve-chamber p, the valve m which is pressed into opened po- IOO sition by a spring a", an electromagnet e for shutting off the supply of gas, the armature z' for said magnet e, which armature z' acts on the Valve m, the electromagnet E for opening the supply of gas and igniting the gas, an armature f for said magnet E, the lug,` 7?, on the armature f for engaging and holding the armature fi in closed position, whereby the armature f when attracted by its magnet E,
1o releases the arm aturez' and permits the spring
