Description
M H P COX KNIFE SHARPENER.'
Patented Feb.16,1897.
(No Modl.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY II. P. COX, OF KIRKIIAM, MARYLAND.
KNIFE-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,127, dated February 16, 18??. Application iiled April 6, 1896. Serial No. 586,440. (No model.)
To all whom. it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, MARY II. P. COX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kirkham, in the county of Talbot and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in attachments for sewing-machines and other similar machines by which knives, scissors, and the like may be easily sharpened; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap device readily attached or affixed to a sewing-machine and adjustable to accommodate it to the varying widths of the table or stand to which it is to be applied, so as not to injure or mar the table.
It comprises an adjustable base, to which is affixed avertically-adjustable standard, in which is mounted a horizontal shaft, on one end of which is a wheel having an edge of emery or other suitable substance, while on the other end of the said shaft is a frictionwheel adapted to engage the periphery of the fly-wheel'of the machine, by which a rotary movement is given to the shaft.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention in this instance resides in the peculiar combinations'and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a view showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the adjustable base-piece. Fig. 3 is a section through the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the fiy-wheel of a sewing-machine or other machine in connection with which it is desired to employ my attachment.
B is the base-piece, formed of two parts adjustably connected together for longitudinal adjustment in any convenient manner. The means for rendering this base-piece adjustable is immaterial, but may consist of grooves and set-screws Working therein and serving to hold the parts in their adjusted position in a well-known way. The outer ends of the base-piece, which constitutes a clamp, are bent under to form sort of hooks b, as shown, which are adapted to engage opposite edges of the table or other device to which the device is applied. Rising from one part of this basepiece is a hollow standard C, in which is vertically adjustably held the rod D, Which is held in its adjusted position, as bya set-screw E, and in the upper end of this rod is mounted to revolve the horizontal shaft F, which at one end carries the friction-Wheel G, which may be of rubber or covered with rubber and preferably concave on its periphery and arranged to engage the iiy-Wheel A, as shown. On the other end of this shaft is the emerywheel H or other wheel having a periphery of emery or other sharpening substance.
I is a hole in the top of the rod D, through which the shaft may be lubricated when necessary.
The operation will be apparent and a detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed as new is- The combination with the basepiece havy ing hooked ends and adjustable in length, of the hollow standard rising from said basepiece, the rod adjustable in said standard, the horizontal shaft mounted to revolve in said rod, the friction-Wheel on said shaft to engage a fly-wheel of a sewing-machine or the like, and a wheel on the other end of said shaft and having an edge of sharpening 1naterial, as set forth.
'In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib-.
ing witnesses.
MARY II. P. COX.
