COMPOSITION FOR PREVENTING SQUEAK IN SHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,918, dated February 9, 1897.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ABISHA LAWToN THOMP-' SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Creek, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in squeak-Preventing Compounds for Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention is a compound powder prepared for insertion between the soles of shoes to prevent or eradicate the squeak thereof, as it may be.

This powder, of ingredients to be hereinafter mentioned, is applied in two ways, depend ing upon where used, either in the factory or in the store.

If used by the manufacturer, a paste is made of the powder mixed with water and spread in an even coat from the ball to the toe and, if desired, in the heel also. Care should be taken to have an ample amount at the central portions of the sole.

If used by the dealer or purchaser, the shoe is placed upon a metal last and the channelcover lifted and an awl inserted at the toe in a slanting direction.

A device whichis subj ect to an application for Letters Patent filed simultaneously herewith, Serial No. 560,426, filed August 24, 1895, is inserted in the awlhole and the powder injected between the sole. The heel can be filled in a similar manner.

The composition of my prepared powder is as follows: French chalk, six parts; yellow ocher, five parts; pulverized 0rrisroot, one part. It is not desired, however, to confine myself to the use of yellow ocher and orrisroot in the compound with French chalk, as any other earth or odorous preparation may be substituted for the same without detriment.

Having described my invention, what I wish to claim is- 1. A composition of matter comprising, French chalk, yellow ocher and pulverized orris-root, for the purpose described.

2. A composition of matter, comprising French chalk, an earthy substance, and an odorous powder substantially as described.
