Be it known that I, DAVID F. WHITEMAN,

of Oregon Oity, in the county of Clackamas and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing- Machines; and I do hereby declare the' following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this speciiication. My invention relates to improvements in washing-machines; and it pertains to that class of Washing-machines having a revolving body, as will be fully described hereinafter, and particularly referred to in the claims.

The object of my invention is to provide a rotatable washing-machine having upon its' inner side parallel strips provided with openings or recesses forming cups, which perform the double function of creating friction upon the clothes placed therein and of emptying the water upon the clothes as the body revolves, and the spaces between the strips furnish channels for the free passage of the water under the clothes as the body is rotated; and in providing a gear mechanism, by means of which the body is rapidly and easily revolved.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a washing-machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the center of the body portion. Fig. 3 is a detached view of one side of the body with the recessed strips connected thereto. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective Vview of part of one of the strips within the body of the washing-machine.

Referring now to the drawings, A indicates the base of a supporting-frame, having extending upward from one side thereof the standards B. The upper ends of the standards are connected by parallel vertical strips C, and the body D of the washing-machine is provided with projections a, extending into the inner strip at the upper end of the standards, and a projection ZJ at the opposite side of the body portion resting in a bearing at the upper end of a standard E, projecting from the opposite side of the said base.

the parallel strips at the upper ends of the standards and provided at each side with the inner and outer pinions I-I and I, the body having a gear-wheel J meshing with the pinion II, and a driving-gear J' is journaled inthe outer strip and in a bearing K and meshes with the pinion I. The driving-gear has its vshaft projecting' beyond its outer bearing and adapted to receive a handle L, by means of which it is rot-ated7 and through the medium of the gear the body portion is revolved, as will be readily understood.

The body portion of the washing-machine is rectangular in section, as clearly shown, and its sides and bottom are provided with parallel strips M. These strips M are situated side by side to form a channel N between them and are provided with a series of openings or recesses O, the purpose of which will be presently stated.

The top of thewashing-rnachine is provided with an opening Q, through which the clothes to be washed are placed. The opening is closed by a lid R, having a clamp S, which engages the bails T, adapted to lap over the lid and to thereby be clamped in position.

The clothes to be washed having been placed in the body, together with the suitable quantity of water, the body is then rotated this tumbles the clothes around and around in the body portion, the recesses in the strips forming cups which perform the double function of creating a friction upon the clothes for washing them and when the strips are carried up to empty the water contained therein upon the clothes, which tends to rinse or clean them of the dirt which has been loosened by the frictional contact of the edges of the openings. The lstrips are preferably notched between the openings for the purpose of giving increased friction. The channels between the strips afford a free circulation of the water around under the body is being rotated.

It will be noted that the projections and the cavities formed thereinl perform a combined action. The clothes are rubbed bythe projections and in the presence of water contained Within said cavities, insuring a plentiful supply of water at the frictional points,

From the above description it will be seen that the frictional contact is caused upon the clothes for loosening the dirt and that water is applied to the upper side of the clothes from the cups in the strips and that water is circulated between the clothes in the channels between the strips, thus very thoroughly and quickly washing the clothes.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A washing-machine comprising a rotating body having a plurality of separated strips on the inner side thereof and extending in the direction of rotation, forming` circulatingspaces between the strips under the clothes in the direction of rotation, said strips having a plurality of circumferentially-closed cavities, with open outer ends, forming cups for the purpose described.

2. A Washing-machine comprising a rotat ing body having a plurality of separated strips on the inner side thereof and extending in the direction ot' rotation, forming circulatingspaces between them under the clothes in the direction of rotation, said strips having throughout their length a plurality of transversely-extending proj ections,the projections having a plurality of circumferentially-closed cavities with open outer ends, substantially as shown and described.
